OPEN ROLE
Principal Biostatistician
Lead the statistical design and analysis of clinical and health research projects, set the standard for the work, and act as the senior methodological voice on the projects that need one.
About the role
OnlineSPSS supports researchers from study design to publication. Clinical and health research is one area where that support is needed: trial analyses, observational cohorts, diagnostic accuracy studies, survival and longitudinal models, and the reporting that goes with them under CONSORT, STROBE, STARD and journal requirements.
The Principal Biostatistician is the senior statistician on these projects. You scope the analysis with the Research Coordinator, decide the methodological approach, carry out or supervise the analysis, and sign off the reporting. On the most specialized projects, your methodological judgment shapes the analysis, within OnlineSPSS review.
About you
You have spent years doing applied biostatistics where the result is read by clinicians, ethics committees and journal reviewers, and you are comfortable being the person who decides when a method is defensible and when it is not. You write clearly, explain choices without jargon, and would rather ask a researcher one more question than guess.
You want a project-based collaboration on complex, well-defined projects with colleagues who care about the same things, alongside your own practice or research.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the statistical design and analysis plan for clinical and health research projects, including sample size and power.
- Carry out complex analyses: survival and time-to-event models, longitudinal and mixed models, diagnostic accuracy, meta-analysis.
- Produce fully interpreted, publication-ready reports to the required reporting standard, with reproducible syntax or code.
- Review analyses and reports prepared by other statisticians before delivery.
- Advise the Research Coordinator on scope and feasibility during the assessment of new projects.
- Respond to journal statistical review comments on delivered work.
Required experience and competencies
- PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics or Epidemiology.
- Six or more years of applied biostatistics in clinical, pharmaceutical, public health or academic settings.
- Expert in at least two of SPSS, R, Stata and SAS; strong in survival analysis, mixed models and regression modeling.
- Working knowledge of CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA and STARD, and of what journal statistical reviewers look for.
- Experience reviewing other statisticians' work and giving precise, constructive feedback.
- Clear written English; able to explain a method and its limits to a non-statistician.
- Based in the United States.
ALSO VALUED
- Bayesian methods, adaptive designs or health economics.
- Publications as a statistical co-author.
- Experience with NVivo or MAXQDA for mixed methods studies.
How we work together
This is a partnership, not a salaried position. Our core team of PhD-level statisticians is in-house; for specialized projects we bring in a partner statistician, also PhD-qualified and based in the United States, who works under our management, our confidentiality terms and our review. When a project that matches your expertise comes in, we bring you into it. The scope and your fee for that project are agreed before any work begins, so there is never an open-ended commitment on either side. A Research Coordinator handles client contact, scoping and timelines, so your time goes to the statistics. Every project is confidential, and so is your application.
HOW WE HIRE
Four Steps, No Surprises
Email, a conversation, a short exercise, then agreement. The process usually takes two to three weeks.
Apply by email
CV, a short note on how you work, and one piece of work you can share.
A conversation
Forty-five minutes with a senior statistician about your experience and ours.
A realistic exercise
A small analysis on a prepared dataset, in your own time. We discuss it together.
Agreement and first project
Clear partnership terms, then your first project, scoped and priced before it starts.
