What Is SPSS Used For in Research?
IBM SPSS Statistics is the most widely used statistical package in the social, behavioral, health and education sciences, chosen for its menu-driven interface, its handling of survey and questionnaire data, and output that journals and committees recognize. Researchers use it for everything from frequencies and reliability to regression, factor analysis and mixed models, with extensions such as PROCESS and AMOS for mediation and structural equation modeling. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides an SPSS statistical analysis service in which an in-house PhD-level statistician carries out the agreed analysis in syntax, working from your data and delivering the data, syntax and output together.
WHY ONLINESPSS FOR SPSS
SPSS Is Where We Started
The work of an SPSS specialist shows in three ways researchers notice.
Syntax, not clicks
Every analysis is written as syntax and delivered with the project, so a reviewer, a supervisor or you can rerun it line by line and see every option that was set.
Output you can hand over
The SPSS output viewer file is kept, and the tables that matter are rebuilt in APA style with the statistic, the confidence interval and the effect size the journal expects.
Checked before the model
Missing-value codes, variable types, reverse-scored items and exclusion settings are checked first, because most wrong SPSS results come from the data window, not the statistics.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
Four Points at Which Researchers Bring Us an SPSS Project
Whether the data are freshly collected, half analyzed or already reviewed, an SPSS statistician starts from a checked dataset, and each of these four requests begins there.
Data Collected, Analysis Not Started Survey, questionnaire or clinical data are in SPSS or Excel, the research questions are set, and the analyses that answer them have to be chosen, run and reported.
Output That Needs Interpreting The tests have been run but the output viewer is full of tables, and which numbers go into the results section, and what they mean, is not clear.
Reviewer or Committee Comments A journal reviewer or committee has asked for assumption checks, effect sizes, a different model or a corrected table, and the analysis has to be revisited and the answer documented.
Analysis Plan Before Data Collection The instrument and sample are being decided, and the analyses, the sample size they need and the variable coding have to be set before the first response is recorded.
ANALYSES IN SPSS
Analyses Carried Out in SPSS for Your Research Design
The test follows the design, and each card links to the related statistical methods where the choice is explained.
Descriptive Statistics & Frequencies
Sample characteristics, distributions and normality checks, reported as the Table 1 the study needs.
t-Tests & ANOVA
Group comparisons from independent and paired t-tests to factorial and repeated-measures ANOVA, with post hoc tests and effect sizes.
Correlation & Linear Regression
Pearson and Spearman correlations, multiple and hierarchical regression, with assumptions checked and coefficients interpreted.
Logistic Regression
Binary, multinomial and ordinal outcomes modeled with odds ratios, classification tables and model fit reported.
Factor Analysis & Reliability
Exploratory factor analysis and principal components, with Cronbach's alpha and item analysis for each scale.
Nonparametric Tests
Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests when the data do not meet parametric assumptions.
Mediation & Moderation (PROCESS)
Indirect and conditional effects estimated with the PROCESS macro, bootstrapped confidence intervals and the model number stated.
Chi-Square & Crosstabs
Associations between categorical variables with expected counts checked, Fisher's exact test where needed and Cramer's V reported.
Mixed Models & Repeated Measures
Longitudinal and clustered data fitted with MIXED, with the covariance structure chosen from the design and justified.
COMMON SPSS ISSUES
Where SPSS Analyses Go Wrong Before the Test
SPSS rarely stops when a dataset is set up wrongly: the test runs and the numbers are simply different from those intended, so each check below is made before any estimate is reported.
Missing-Value Codes Left as Numbers A 99 or -1 entered for "not answered" is averaged into the mean unless it is declared missing, so every variable's missing codes are set in the data window first.
String Variables That Should Be Numeric Data imported from Excel or a survey platform often arrive as text, which SPSS will not analyze, so types, measurement levels and value labels are checked and corrected.
Reverse-Scored Items Scales with negatively worded items give wrong totals and low reliability unless those items are recoded, so the scale's scoring rules are applied and documented in syntax.
Listwise Versus Pairwise Exclusion The sample size can change from one table to the next depending on the exclusion setting, so the rule is chosen in advance, stated in the report and the same across analyses.
Unbalanced Designs and Sums of Squares With unequal group sizes the default Type III sums of squares and the hypothesis they test are stated, and an interaction is interpreted before any main effect.
Output Tables That Do Not Match the Text Results copied from the output viewer drift from what was finally run, so every number in the report is traced to a table in the delivered .spv file.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive From an SPSS Analysis
The files follow the SPSS project, agreed in the scope and provided where applicable, so that every table in the report can be rerun from the data.
Cleaned Data File (.sav) The analysis-ready dataset with variable types, labels, missing codes and computed scales set, so the file opens correctly on your copy of SPSS.
Syntax File (.sps) Every recode, scale and analysis as commented syntax in run order, so the whole analysis reproduces from the raw data without clicking through menus.
Output File (.spv) The complete SPSS output viewer file, kept as the record that every reported number comes from.
APA-Style Tables and Figures Tables and figures built from the output in the style your journal or committee requires, with effect sizes and confidence intervals, ready to place in the manuscript.
Statistical Interpretation A written reading of each result in plain language, with the assumption checks, the statistic, its interval and what it means for the research question.
Variable Codebook A codebook listing every variable, its coding, its source items and every recoding decision, so a second analyst can follow the dataset.
OTHER PLATFORMS
When Another Platform May Be More Appropriate
SPSS covers most designs in the social and health sciences, but the platform follows the method and the team, and some projects are better served elsewhere.

How an SPSS Analysis May Look in Practice
An illustration of how a questionnaire dataset with hidden coding problems was made ready and analyzed.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NURSING WORKFORCE SURVEY · UNITED STATES
A hospital research group had survey data from around 400 nurses on burnout, workload and intention to leave, exported from an online survey platform into SPSS, and wanted to know whether workload predicted intention to leave and whether burnout explained that relationship.
The first pass through the data window found three problems: the Likert items had been imported as text, the “prefer not to say” code of 9 was being averaged into the scale means, and four reverse-worded burnout items had not been recoded. Types were corrected, missing codes declared, the items recoded and the scales computed, all in syntax. Reliability was checked for each scale, hierarchical regression tested workload as a predictor of intention to leave with demographic controls, and PROCESS model 4 estimated the indirect effect through burnout with 5,000 bootstrap samples.
Outcome: The group received the cleaned .sav file, the syntax that reproduced every step, APA tables for the regression and mediation models with confidence intervals, and a written interpretation of the indirect effect for the results section.

RESEARCH DISCIPLINES
Research Fields Where SPSS Is Common
SPSS is the standard package in psychology, nursing and health research, education and business, and the same questions about coding, missing values and scale scoring arise in every field that works with questionnaires.
HOW WE ASSESS YOUR PROJECT
We Review Your Actual Research
Your assessment is based on a review of your actual research materials and analytical requirements, not a generic project category.
You Submit Your Project Details
Share whatever is available at the current stage, such as the research aim, protocol or proposal, dataset, variable list, manuscript or statistical requirements.
We Review Your Research and Define the Scope
Your statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the materials to understand the study design, research questions, data structure, analytical requirements and expected deliverables. If clarification is needed, additional documents or information can be requested before the assessment is finalized.
Your Analysis Is Completed and Delivered
Once the scope and fixed project fee are agreed, the in-house statistician completes the work and the Research Coordinator remains the communication point through delivery, with the analysis, deliverables and timeline as agreed.
RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from a researcher whose questionnaire data needed scale scoring and reliability before the main analysis.
“I needed the work kept in IBM SPSS because that is what our team uses internally. The main problem was having .sav and .spv files but no syntax to reproduce what had already been run. OnlineSPSS corrected the setup and returned the project files with clear reporting, which made later changes much easier.”
Statistical Support Within Your Research OnlineSPSS provides the agreed methodological, analytical and statistical reporting support, including the SPSS data, syntax and output described in the scope. The researcher or research team retains the scientific question, substantive interpretation, conclusions and overall responsibility for the research.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About SPSS Analysis for Research
Short answers to what researchers ask about SPSS consulting and SPSS data analysis services, from versions and file formats to syntax, PROCESS and confidentiality.
Which SPSS version do you use, and will the files open on mine?
Tell us which version of IBM SPSS Statistics you or your institution use when you request an assessment. The files to be delivered are confirmed with the scope before any work begins.
Do I need my own SPSS license to receive the analysis?
No. You do not need SPSS to read the interpretation and the tables. The .sav, .sps and .spv files are delivered where applicable, for you or your institution to open whenever a copy of SPSS is available.
Can you work from data in Excel, Google Forms or Qualtrics?
Yes. Exports from Excel, CSV, Google Forms, Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey and REDCap are imported into SPSS, and variable types, labels and missing codes are set during the import so that the dataset is correct before any test is run. The import steps are part of the delivered syntax.
Will I receive the syntax, and can I rerun the analysis myself?
Yes. Every project is written as syntax, commented and in run order, and delivered with the data and output. Opening the .sps file on the .sav file and running it reproduces every table, which is what a reviewer or supervisor may ask you to show.
Can you run mediation with PROCESS or structural models with AMOS?
Yes. Mediation and moderation are estimated with the PROCESS macro, with the model number, the bootstrap samples and the confidence intervals stated. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models are fitted in AMOS alongside the SPSS data, and the path diagram and fit indices are reported.
Should I use SPSS or the software my coauthors already use?
Use what the team and the journal will work with. SPSS is right when coauthors review in SPSS, the design is standard and the output must be readable without code. If the team or journal works in R or Stata, the workflow must be scripted there for reproducibility, or the design needs the most flexible model specifications, we recommend that platform during the assessment and say why.
How do you protect my research data and confidentiality?
Your research data and project details are handled confidentially, project information is not published, and an NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more on our Confidentiality & Data Security page.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share whatever is available, from the research aim to the dataset. A statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the materials, asks for anything missing, and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are confirmed before any work begins. There is no commitment until you accept it.
