What Is EViews Used For in Research?
EViews is a commercial econometrics and statistical package for time series, panel and cross-section data, used in economics, finance and applied forecasting work. Researchers choose it for its workfile, which holds each series with its dates and frequency when the structure is dated, and for its tools for equation estimation, unit-root and cointegration testing, vector autoregressions and forecasting. Saved equations keep their specification and sample, but a written record or program is needed to trace each series from the raw data to the final forecast. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides an EViews data analysis service in which an in-house PhD-level statistician carries out the agreed analysis in EViews, working from your workfiles and documenting each transformation.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
Four Points at Which Researchers Bring Us an EViews Project
Each situation below starts from a different file state, and in each one an EViews statistician begins with the dates and frequencies before any equation is touched.
Workfile That Does Not Line Up Series from different sources arrive with mismatched dates or frequencies, and the workfile structure has to be set right before a lag, a growth rate or a forecast can be trusted.
Specification to Estimate and Test The series are collected and the model family chosen, and the equations now need estimating with residual, stability and forecast diagnostics in a workfile a coauthor can open.
Tests Without a Clear Reading Unit-root, cointegration or structural-break results point in different directions, and the specification has to be argued from the question and the data, not from the last test run.
Analysis to Document or Hand Over A thesis chapter, working paper or replication request needs the series, transformations and equations written down so that a coauthor or reviewer can rebuild each table.
ANALYSES IN EVIEWS
Analyses Carried Out in EViews for Your Data
The model follows the frequency and structure of the data and the question being asked, and each card links to the method page behind the choice of estimator.
Time Series Analysis
EViews time series analysis begins with a verified date structure, then ARIMA or vector autoregressive models, with stationarity, lag length and residual autocorrelation examined before forecasts.
Panel Data Analysis (Fixed & Random Effects)
EViews panel data work sets cross-section and period identifiers, estimates fixed or random effects, and matches the covariance estimator to dependence across units or over time.
Multiple Linear Regression
Equations are estimated by least squares with autocorrelation-consistent standard errors where the residuals call for them, and residual and stability diagnostics accompany the coefficients.
Instrumental Variable Analysis
Macroeconomic and policy equations are estimated by two-stage least squares or GMM, with lagged instruments used only where the timing argument holds, and the overidentification test read as a check.
Interrupted Time Series
A policy or event date is placed in the dated workfile, the earlier trend and the change in level or slope are estimated, and serial correlation is handled before the change is interpreted.
Difference-in-Differences (DiD)
Treated and comparison series sit in one panel with a dated treatment indicator, the effect is read from the interaction term, and the error structure matches how the units were sampled.
COMMON EVIEWS ISSUES
Where EViews Analyses Go Wrong Before the Equation
Most EViews problems arise in how the workfile and the series were set up, and they rarely trigger an error, so each check below is made before an estimate is reported.
Frequency and Date Structure In a regular dated workfile every period exists, but in an irregular or undated one a lag refers to the previous observation, not the previous period. The structure is verified before any lag or forecast.
Frequency Conversion Method Moving a monthly series to a quarterly page can average, sum or take the last value, and each gives a different series. The method follows what the variable measures, such as a flow or a rate.
Unit-Root Tests in Context Results depend on the deterministic terms and the lag length, and the tests have limited power. Stationarity is judged from the plot, the economics and several tests, not a single automated sequence.
Cointegration and Differencing Johansen results change with the deterministic specification and the lag order, and differencing a cointegrated set discards its long-run relation. The choice follows the question the model must answer.
Estimation Sample and Forecast Sample The estimation period, the forecast period and the choice between static and dynamic forecasts are stated, so that forecast errors are evaluated on observations the model did not use.
Residual Autocorrelation Serial correlation in the residuals is tested, and a consistent covariance estimator is not used to hide a misspecified lag structure that a corrected model would remove.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive From an EViews Analysis
The files follow a traceable EViews project, agreed in the scope and provided where applicable, so that every transformation and equation can be reviewed.
EViews Workfile The workfile with a verified date structure and the original series kept apart from the series derived from them, so the raw data stay available.
Equation Specifications Saved equation objects with the sample, estimation method and covariance option, and the output of each estimated model as it was run.
Transformation Record A written record of logs, differences, seasonal adjustments and frequency conversions, naming the series generated and the source series behind each.
Programs for Rerunning EViews programs that rebuild the workfile and rerun the estimations, provided where agreed, so a coauthor can reproduce the results from the source series.
Tables, Charts and Forecasts Publication-ready tables and charts in Word, Excel or another format as agreed, with coefficient estimates, confidence intervals and forecast intervals where forecasts are made.
Statistical Interpretation Each result is explained within what the specification supports, with the diagnostics and the limits of the data stated plainly.
OTHER PLATFORMS
When Another Platform May Be More Appropriate
EViews is built around dated series, and some projects, because of their data or their team, are better carried out in another platform.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How an EViews Analysis May Look in Practice
An illustration of how monthly and quarterly series are aligned before a forecasting model is estimated.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · MACROECONOMIC FORECASTING RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
Monthly price data and quarterly output data had to share one model when an economics department research group set out to estimate how consumer price inflation responds to a policy interest rate, and to forecast it.
The question and a vector autoregressive specification were set before any result was examined. The first workfile placed the monthly and quarterly series on one monthly page, and the lagged output term was found to sit one quarter out of line, because one source had stamped each quarterly value with its release date, which falls in the following quarter. The quarterly values were re-dated to the quarter they describe, the structure was rebuilt on a single quarterly page, the monthly series were converted to quarterly by averaging because they measure rates, and every conversion was recorded. Stationarity was judged from plots and several tests with the deterministic terms stated, and the lag length was compared across information criteria before the forecast sample was fixed.
Outcome: The group received the estimated model with its coefficient estimates and confidence intervals, forecasts with their intervals evaluated on a held-out period, the EViews workfile and a written record of every transformation.

RESEARCH DISCIPLINES
Research Fields Where EViews Is Common
EViews is often used in economics, finance and applied macroeconomics, and the same questions about date structure, stationarity and documented transformations arise in any field that analyzes series over time.
HOW WE ASSESS YOUR PROJECT
We Review Your Actual Research
Your assessment is based on a review of your actual research materials and analytical requirements, not a generic project category.
You Submit Your Project Details
Share whatever is available at the current stage, such as the research aim, protocol or proposal, dataset, variable list, manuscript or statistical requirements.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from an applied economist on a misaligned date and frequency structure and a workflow rebuilt from the files already in hand.
“Our issue with EViews was not the interface itself; it was the date and frequency structure being misaligned before the time-series work. They worked directly with the files we already had and left us with a much cleaner, reproducible workflow rather than just screenshots of output.”
Statistical Support Within Your Research OnlineSPSS provides the agreed methodological, analytical and statistical reporting support, including the EViews files described in the scope. The researcher or research team retains the scientific question, substantive interpretation, conclusions and overall responsibility for the research.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About EViews Analysis for Research
Short answers to what researchers ask before sharing an EViews project, from the models we estimate and existing workfiles to specification tests, rerunning the analysis and confidentiality.
Which econometric and time series models do you estimate in EViews?
EViews econometric analysis at OnlineSPSS covers the models researchers most often estimate in it: ARIMA and vector autoregressive models, panel estimation, least squares and instrumental-variable equations, interrupted time series and forecasting. Which of them fits depends on the frequency and length of your series and on whether the aim is explanation or forecasting.
Will you keep working in my existing EViews workfile?
Yes. The workfile you send is the starting point: its pages, series and saved equations are read before anything is added, and the raw series are never overwritten. A finished EViews analysis can also be checked on its own through Independent Statistical Review, which tests the date structure, the transformations and the specifications behind the reported estimates.
Should unit-root and cointegration tests decide my specification?
No sequence of tests should decide it alone. The tests are sensitive to the deterministic terms, the lag length and the sample, and they have limited power, so the specification is argued from the research question, the plots and the economics, and the tests are reported as evidence within that argument.
Can the whole analysis be rerun from the source series?
Yes, within the agreed scope. An EViews program rebuilds the workfile from the source series, applies each transformation in order and re-estimates every equation, so a coauthor or a journal’s replication check does not depend on objects saved by hand. When a data provider revises its series, running the program on the new vintage shows how the estimates change.
How do you protect my research data and confidentiality?
Your EViews workfiles, series and programs are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, such as the workfile and any programs, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
