Statistical Analysis for Environmental Research

Environmental research statistical analysis is the statistical design, analysis and reporting of studies of environmental conditions and of the human activities, policies and exposures connected to them, typically from monitoring stations, repeated site surveys, sustainability indicators and surveys of behavior. Measurements are ordered in time and space, so successive and neighboring values resemble one another, concentrations are skewed and often reported only as below a detection limit, and a policy starts against a background of season and trend, which leaves independent-error models overconfident and simple before-and-after comparisons misleading. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides environmental statistics through in-house PhD-level statisticians, who settle the measurement structure, the handling of nondetects and the baseline trend with you before any model is fitted.

WHEN TO ENGAGE

Statistical Support at Different Stages of Environmental Research

Environmental researchers usually come to us at a recognizable point, from siting a monitoring network to a regulator's questions about a trend.

Planning a Monitoring or Impact Study You are designing a monitoring program or the assessment of an intervention and need the sampling sites, the frequency, the baseline period and the detection limits considered before measurement begins.

Analyzing Monitoring and Indicator Data Your station series, site surveys or sustainability indicators are assembled, and the treatment of autocorrelation, seasonality and nondetects needs to be chosen, run and checked.

Evaluating a Policy or Intervention A regulation, program or technology change has started, and the analysis must separate its effect from season, earlier trend and weather, using a baseline or comparison sites.

Revisiting a Trend or Impact Analysis A trend or impact analysis was run with independent errors or with nondetects set to a constant, and an advisor, regulator or reviewer has questioned how dependence and detection limits were handled.

RESEARCH CONTEXT

Research Designs and Data We Work With in Environmental Research

Environmental monitoring data analysis works with measurements over time and across sites, each with instrument, sampling and reporting features that shape the analysis.

01
Station Monitoring Series

Daily or monthly measurements of air, water or climate indicators at fixed stations, with gaps, instrument changes and values reported as below detection.

02
Exposure and Health Linkages

Environmental exposure estimates linked to survey or health outcomes by place and time, where exposure is modeled for areas, not measured for each person.

03
Pre-Post and Comparison-Site Studies

Sites or communities observed before and after a regulation, restoration or technology change, with comparison sites that are not always comparable.

04
Sustainability Indicator Panels

Country, city or firm indicators for emissions, energy or resource use over years, often with few units and indicators that move together.

05
Behavior and Practice Surveys

Surveys of pro-environmental behavior, energy use or sustainability practice, with attitude scales and self-report within households or communities.

06
Life-Cycle and Resource-Use Inventories

Material, energy and emissions inventories for products or processes, with uncertain inputs and variation between sites.

METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Statistical Issues We Consider in Environmental Research

These checks come first in an environmental dataset, because dependence, detection limits and the baseline trend can change a conclusion more than the choice of model does.

Autocorrelation in Space and Time Successive and neighboring measurements are alike, so independent-error models usually overstate significance. Residual autocorrelation is examined and an error structure that allows for it is used.

Values Below Detection Limits Concentrations reported as below a limit are censored, not zero. Substitution is avoided where it matters, methods for left-censored data are used, and the share of nondetects is reported.

Seasonality and Pre-existing Trends A change after an intervention is judged against the seasonal pattern and the trend already under way, since many indicators were improving or worsening before the policy started.

Skewed Exposure Distributions Concentrations and emissions are right-skewed with extreme values from events, so the distribution is examined, the scale or model is matched to it and influential days are checked.

Weather and Activity as Confounders Meteorology, traffic and economic activity move pollutants and indicators, so these are accounted for or examined before a change is attributed to a policy.

Few Units and Correlated Indicators Sustainability panels have few countries or cities and indicators that move together, so models are kept small, uncertainty is shown with intervals and the weights of composite indices are tested.

STATISTICAL METHODS

Methods Selected for the Research Question and Study Design

Each method family is chosen for the outcome and the data structure of your study, and the line under each title explains why it is used with environmental data.

Longitudinal & Multilevel Analysis

Station series and sustainability panels are analyzed as time series and panels, and an intervention is judged against the baseline trend, using comparison sites where they exist.

Explore Longitudinal & Multilevel Analysis
Clinical, Survival & Epidemiological

Concentrations below detection limits are left-censored, so methods from survival analysis are applied to them, and a regulation's start date is judged in an interrupted series.

Explore Clinical, Survival & Epidemiological
Regression & Predictive Modeling

Skewed concentrations and counts are modeled on the scale that matches their distribution, with weather and activity covariates and curved responses allowed.

Explore Regression & Predictive Modeling
Bayesian & Computational Methods

Uncertain inputs to life-cycle or exposure estimates are propagated by simulation, and gaps in monitoring records are imputed under stated assumptions.

Explore Bayesian & Computational Methods
Multivariate, Scale & Reliability

Attitude and behavior scales are scored and checked for reliability, and composite sustainability indices are built from components whose stability is tested.

Explore Multivariate, Scale & Reliability
Structural & Latent Variable Modeling

Pathways from beliefs to behavior, or from a policy to emissions through intermediate variables, are tested as path models, with causal wording limited by the design.

DELIVERABLES

Statistical Outputs Prepared for Your Research

The outputs follow the structure of an environmental study, from the review of the station metadata to the scripts that regenerate every series model.

Data & Study Review Station metadata, sampling dates, detection limits, units and gaps in the record are reviewed, and the proportion of nondetects and extreme values is examined before modeling.

Statistical Analysis Time series, censored-data, panel or interrupted-series models as agreed, with residual autocorrelation, influence and seasonality diagnostics and the planned sensitivity analyses.

Effect Estimates & Uncertainty Estimated changes, concentration ratios and trend differences with confidence intervals that allow for autocorrelation, shown in the units of the measurement.

Tables & Figures Descriptive tables including nondetect shares, time series plots with the intervention marked, seasonal and residual plots and model tables for the report.

Statistical Interpretation Changes are linked to a policy only as far as the baseline and comparison support, indicator associations are not worded as causal, and the limits of the monitoring record are stated.

Analysis Files R scripts, Python code, Stata do-files or SAS programs that regenerate each series model, with the handling of nondetects and gaps documented.

REPORTING

Reporting Environmental Research

The guideline follows the design of the study, and where none governs, the report carries the details needed to reproduce it.

Observational analyses linking environmental exposure to outcomes report to STROBE, and nonrandomized evaluations of programs delivered to people or households, such as an energy-saving intervention, report to TREND. For monitoring studies and for regulations or infrastructure changes measured at stations, no single guideline governs, so the report states the instruments, detection limits, sampling schedule, the treatment of nondetects and gaps, and the model for autocorrelation in enough detail to reproduce each value. Estimates are shown with confidence intervals in the units of measurement, seasonal and trend terms are described, and a sensitivity table shows how the estimates change under other treatments of nondetects. Journal and agency requirements are checked on top, including data-sharing statements.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

How the Analysis May Look in Practice

An illustration of how an impact question on monitoring data moves from station series to a result that respects dependence and detection limits.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · RIVER BASIN WATER QUALITY PROGRAM · UNITED STATES

A river basin authority wanted to know whether a stormwater retrofit program was followed by lower nutrient concentrations downstream of treated catchments than the earlier trend would have led it to expect.

Monthly samples showed strong seasonality, successive months were correlated, rainfall varied between years, and a share of readings was reported only as below the detection limit. Before outcomes were examined, we fixed an interrupted time series at each treated station with seasonal terms and a rainfall covariate, an error structure that allowed for autocorrelation, and a comparison with stations in untreated catchments. Nondetects were handled as left-censored values instead of being set to half the limit, and the result was compared with simple substitution as a sensitivity analysis. The change was worded as a change relative to the earlier trend under the stated design assumptions.

Outcome: The authority received the level and slope changes with 95% confidence intervals, the autocorrelation diagnostics, the nondetect shares, a methods paragraph on the design, the nondetect handling and the autocorrelation model, and the scripts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About Statistical Analysis for Environmental Research

Short answers to what environmental researchers ask before sharing a dataset, from detection limits and policy impacts to few-unit panels, confidentiality and the assessment.

Environmental research most often uses time series and interrupted time series models, methods for censored concentrations, regression for skewed measurements, panel models for sustainability indicators and path models for behavior. The choice follows how the measurements were ordered in time and space and how the intervention started. Our Statistical Methods pages describe each family.

A value below the detection limit is censored, not zero, and replacing it with a constant can distort means, trends and comparisons, especially when many values are nondetects. We report the share of nondetects, use methods for left-censored data that match the sample size and the share, and compare the result with simple substitution as a sensitivity analysis.

The change after the policy is judged against the trend and seasonal pattern that existed before it, usually in an interrupted time series, with comparison sites where they exist and weather or activity covariates where they matter. The error structure allows for autocorrelation, and the finding is worded as a change relative to the earlier trend under the stated assumptions.

In sustainability data analysis with few countries or cities, the small number of units limits what can be estimated, so the models are kept small, the uncertainty is shown with intervals and any indicator ranking is accompanied by its sensitivity to the weights used. Where indicators move together, the analysis states which combinations the data can and cannot separate.

Research data and project details are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
