METHOD OVERVIEW
What Is Structural Equation Modeling?
Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a latent variable framework that joins a measurement model, which links observed indicators to latent constructs, with a structural model of the relations among those constructs, and estimates both together with their uncertainty. The model implies a covariance structure, and fit describes how closely it reproduces the data, which does not show the model is true, since different models can fit equally well. Identification and the estimator determine what can be estimated. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides structural equation modeling analysis within your study design, with the relevant checks, estimates, uncertainty measures, interpretation and publication-ready reporting.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
When Is Structural Equation Modeling Appropriate?
SEM fits a theory that links constructs measured by several indicators, and these are the research situations in which researchers most often ask us to apply or confirm it.
Constructs With Several Indicators A theory links constructs such as engagement or satisfaction, each measured by several items, and the relations among them must be estimated without ignoring measurement error.
Competing Theoretical Models Two or more theories imply different structures among the same constructs, and the models must be compared on fit and parsimony, knowing that equivalent models can fit identically.
Mediation Through Latent Constructs An indirect effect runs through latent constructs and must be estimated with an interval, with measurement error modeled and the causal reading matched to the design.
Reviewing a Completed Analysis A structural model has been fitted, and a reviewer has questioned its fit or its respecification. Independent Statistical Review scrutinizes the specification and its reporting.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH
How We Apply Structural Equation Modeling
Within the family of Structural & Latent Variable Modeling, structural equation modeling consulting starts from the measurement model and the identification of the full model.
Measurement Before Structure We establish the measurement model first, with loadings, residuals and validity evidence, because weak indicators contaminate every structural path. Paths are added only to a sound measurement part.
Identification and Estimator We confirm the model is identified and choose the estimator for the data: maximum likelihood with robust standard errors for continuous indicators, WLSMV for ordinal ones, and full information for missing data.
Fit as Guidance, Not Proof We report chi-square with its degrees of freedom, RMSEA with its interval, CFI, TLI and SRMR, with residuals. No cutoff is a rule, and good fit neither validates a causal story nor excludes equivalent models.
Respecification With Restraint Modification indices are read with theory, since freeing parameters to improve fit capitalizes on chance. Each change is documented with its reason, and a model changed after inspection is labeled exploratory.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive
As part of our Quantitative Data Analysis service, the model is delivered with the estimates, checks and files needed to report and defend it.
Data & Variable Review Indicator scales and distributions, missing data patterns, outliers and the number of cases against estimated parameters are reviewed, and the variables are prepared for the chosen estimator.
Method-Specific Checks Identification, convergence, Heywood cases, residuals and the sensitivity of estimates to the estimator and to alternative specifications are examined, so misfit is located, not only summarized.
Statistical Results Standardized and unstandardized loadings and paths with confidence intervals, indirect effects, the variance explained in endogenous constructs, global fit indices and any model comparison.
Publication-Ready Tables & Figures A path diagram, loading and path tables and a fit table, formatted to APA 7, JARS-Quant reporting items or the journal's requirements, ready to insert.
Interpretation Paths are interpreted as associations unless the design supports causal claims, with measurement quality reported before structural findings and fit described as guidance.
Reproducible Analysis Files Mplus input files, R scripts using lavaan, Stata do-files or SAS PROC CALIS code are provided where applicable, so every estimate can be traced and rerun if the data change.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS
When Another Method May Be More Appropriate
We choose the method by what the model must show. SEM needs measured constructs and a theory, and these methods fit questions with fewer or different demands.
01
Path Analysis
When each construct is a single observed measure, such as dose or a validated total score, a path model is simpler and treats those scores as error-free.
02
Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA)
When the aim is to validate an instrument's structure and no relations among constructs are needed, a measurement model alone answers the question.
03
PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares SEM)
When out-of-sample prediction is the aim, or a construct is a weighted index of its indicators, composite-based PLS-SEM serves that purpose more directly.
04
Mediation Analysis
For one exposure, one mediator and one observed outcome, regression-based mediation with a bootstrap interval for the indirect effect is simpler and often entirely adequate.
CASE EXAMPLE
How We Work in Practice
An illustration of how a structural model moves from a planned specification to a reportable, defensible result.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · ONLINE LEARNING RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
An online learning company's learner research team asked whether course support was associated with intention to finish through learner self-efficacy in one cross-sectional survey.
The plan, fixed before any model was fitted, put the measurement model first, with robust maximum likelihood and full information for missing responses, and WLSMV for the five-point items as a sensitivity analysis. It named full mediation as the hypothesis and a direct path from support to intention as the rival, noting that the reversed order could fit equally well. Once the measurement model held, the two models were compared with a scaled chi-square difference test, and the indirect effect was estimated with a bootstrap confidence interval. As the survey was cross-sectional, paths were written as associations.
Outcome: The team received the estimates with 95% confidence intervals, the indirect effect with its bootstrap interval, fit for both models and the ordinal sensitivity analysis, a path diagram and the scripts.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from a researcher who needed model fit and respecification decisions justified, and received a concise analytical summary for the manuscript.
“We came to the team with a fairly technical Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) problem: model fit and whether any changes were theoretically defensible. They worked through the assumptions and reporting choices with us, then delivered a clean analytical summary rather than pages of software output. The final reporting was much easier to use in the manuscript and in responding to reviewer comments.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Structural Equation Modeling
Short answers to what researchers ask before a structural model, from covariance-based or PLS-SEM and causal claims to confidentiality and the assessment process.
Should I use covariance-based SEM or PLS-SEM?
Choose covariance-based SEM when the question is whether a theory about reflective constructs reproduces the observed covariances; PLS-SEM, a composite-based method, serves prediction and formative measurement. Neither is a remedy for a very small sample, and the two can give different estimates, so we choose from the research aim and the measurement, and state the reasoning.
Does a well-fitting model show that my causal theory is right?
No, good fit shows that the model is consistent with the covariances, not that its causal story is correct, because other models, including equivalent ones, can reproduce the same data. Causal claims depend on the design, such as time ordering, randomization and the control of confounding. In observational data we describe paths as associations and report which alternatives were considered.
How large a sample does my structural model need?
No single number applies, and ratios such as ten cases per parameter or a sample of 200 are rules of thumb only. Adequacy depends on model complexity, the strength of the loadings, the estimator, missing data and the effect of interest. Where the stakes are high, we use a Monte Carlo simulation of the planned model to judge power and the stability of the estimates.
Can you review an analysis that has already been completed?
Yes, we can review a completed structural model before submission or a response to reviewers. We check the identification, the estimator against the item scales, how fit was read, which respecifications were made and why, and the reporting of both parts of the model, and confirm what stands or needs to change.
How do you protect my dataset and research confidentiality?
Your dataset, output files and any protocol or analysis plan are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
