METHOD OVERVIEW
What Is Path Analysis?
Path analysis is a structural equation modeling approach that estimates a system of regression equations among observed variables, separating direct, indirect and total effects along the paths a theory specifies. Every variable is measured directly, so measurement error is not modeled and enters the estimates as it would in ordinary regression. The direction of each path comes from the design and prior knowledge, not from the analysis, and a saturated model, which uses every available parameter, reproduces the data exactly. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides path analysis within your study design, with the relevant checks, estimates, uncertainty measures, interpretation and publication-ready reporting.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
When Is a Path Model Appropriate?
Path model analysis fits a theory in which observed variables act on one another in sequence, and these are the research situations in which researchers most often ask us to apply or confirm it.
Several Outcomes in One System Some variables are predictors of one outcome and outcomes of another, and the equations should be estimated together instead of as a set of separate regressions.
Direct and Indirect Effects A theory states that one variable acts on another through intermediate variables, and the indirect effects need interval estimates, not conclusions from separate p-values.
Competing Orderings of Variables Alternative orderings or omitted paths imply different models, and they must be compared while recognizing that fit alone cannot establish the direction of an effect.
Reviewing a Completed Analysis A path model was fitted, and a reviewer questions whether its fit is informative or its effects causal. Independent Statistical Review assesses its identification and reporting.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH
How We Apply Path Analysis
Within the family of Structural & Latent Variable Modeling, path model analysis begins with the design that justifies each arrow, not with the diagram.
Paths From Design, Not Software We specify each path from theory and the study design, since a diagram does not create causal identification. Time ordering, randomization and measured confounders decide which paths can be read causally.
Saturated and Overidentified A saturated model fits perfectly by construction, so its fit indices carry no information about quality. Fit becomes testable only when paths are constrained, and each constraint needs a stated reason.
Indirect Effects With Intervals An indirect effect is a product of paths and its sampling distribution is skewed, so we estimate it with a bootstrap or Monte Carlo interval and never infer mediation from separate significance tests.
Estimator and Variable Types We match the estimator to the variables: robust maximum likelihood for continuous outcomes, weighted least squares for categorical ones, full information for missing data and cluster-robust errors for nesting.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive
As part of our Quantitative Data Analysis service, the model is delivered with the estimates, checks and files needed to report and defend it.
Data & Variable Review Variable scales, distributions, missing data and the timing of each measurement are reviewed, and the variables are prepared so every equation reflects the hypothesized order of effects.
Method-Specific Checks Identification, residual correlations, collinearity among predictors, outliers and the sensitivity of the paths to alternative orderings are examined, with fit read against the model's saturation.
Statistical Results Standardized and unstandardized path coefficients with confidence intervals, direct, indirect and total effects, the variance explained in each outcome and, for overidentified models, fit indices.
Publication-Ready Tables & Figures A path diagram, a coefficient table and a table decomposing direct, indirect and total effects, formatted to APA 7 or the journal's requirements, ready to insert.
Interpretation Effects are written as associations or, where the design supports it, as causal effects, with the no-unmeasured-confounding assumption stated and the lack of measurement error modeling acknowledged.
Reproducible Analysis Files Model syntax for lavaan, Mplus, Stata's sem command or SAS PROC CALIS is provided where applicable, so each coefficient and interval can be traced and rerun if the data change.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS
When Another Method May Be More Appropriate
We choose the method by how many variables and occasions are involved. Path analysis suits a system of observed variables, and these methods fit simpler, noisier or repeated structures.
01
Mediation Analysis
When the question is a single indirect effect through one mediating variable, a dedicated mediation analysis reports it directly, without a wider system of equations.
02
Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)
When the constructs are measured by several items, a structural equation model separates measurement error from the paths, which a path model cannot do.
03
Multiple Linear Regression
For one outcome with several predictors and no indirect effects, a regression model gives the adjusted associations without needing a system of equations.
04
Cross-Lagged Panel Models
When the same variables are measured on several occasions, cross-lagged models estimate reciprocal paths over time, with stability terms for each variable.
CASE EXAMPLE
How We Work in Practice
An illustration of how a path model moves from a planned structure to a reportable, defensible result.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · PUBLIC OPINION RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
A public opinion research center asked whether news attention and political discussion were associated with intention to vote through political efficacy in a national survey.
The team’s draft plan allowed every possible path among the four observed scores, a saturated model whose fit indices carry no information. Before estimation, we revised the plan so that two paths with no theoretical basis were fixed to zero, making the model overidentified and its fit a test of those restrictions. The indirect effects through efficacy were estimated with bootstrap confidence intervals, with education and age as covariates. Because the survey was cross-sectional and the scores were scale sums, the paths were reported as associations, and the absence of measurement error modeling was stated as a limitation.
Outcome: The team received the path coefficients with 95% confidence intervals, the indirect and total effects with bootstrap intervals, fit indices for the constrained model, a path diagram and the scripts.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from a researcher for whom model fit and defensible model changes were the hard part, and who received reporting focused on the estimates that mattered.
“The difficult part was not pressing the button for Path Analysis; it was model fit and whether any changes were theoretically defensible. They caught the problem early, showed us the defensible approach, and kept the reporting focused on the estimates that mattered. The final output made the fit statistics and substantive interpretation much easier to defend.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Path Analysis
Short answers to what researchers ask before a path model, from regression or path analysis and perfect fit to confidentiality and the assessment process.
Should I use path analysis or separate regressions?
Path analysis estimates the whole system of equations together, giving direct, indirect and total effects and, when paths are constrained, a test of those constraints. In an unconstrained recursive model with complete data the coefficients match the separate regressions, so the gain is the effect decomposition. With one outcome and no indirect effects, regression is enough.
Why does my path model fit perfectly, and is that good?
No, perfect fit usually means the model is saturated: it has as many parameters as the data supply, so it reproduces the covariances exactly and the fit indices say nothing about quality. Fit is informative only when some paths are constrained, and even then it tests those constraints, not whether the causal directions are right.
How should I test an indirect effect in my model?
The indirect effect is a product of paths, so we estimate it directly with a bootstrap or Monte Carlo confidence interval, because its sampling distribution is not normal. Concluding mediation because one path is significant and another is not discards the product and its interval. Interpreting it as mediation also needs causal assumptions that the statistics cannot supply.
Can you review an analysis that has already been completed?
Yes, we can review a completed path model before submission or a response to reviewers. We check the identification, whether fit was read for a saturated model, how the indirect effects were tested, the causal wording of the interpretation and the reporting, and confirm what stands or needs to change.
How do you protect my dataset and research confidentiality?
Your dataset, output files and any protocol or analysis plan are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
