Statistical Analysis for Political Science Research

Political science statistical analysis is the statistical design, analysis and reporting of studies of voters, institutions and states, drawn from opinion surveys, election returns, survey experiments and country-year panels. Poll respondents carry weights, countries are observed repeatedly and are few, outcomes such as vote share or conflict counts are bounded or skewed, and a claim about the effect of an institution or policy needs a design that supports it, so unweighted models, unadjusted standard errors and a controlled regression read as a causal effect can mislead. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides political data analysis through in-house PhD-level statisticians, who agree the weights, the clustering and the identification strategy with you before any model is fitted.

WHEN TO ENGAGE

Statistical Support at Different Stages of Political Science Research

Political scientists usually come to us at a recognizable point, from the design of a survey experiment to a reviewer's challenge to a causal claim in a finished paper.

Planning a Survey or Experiment You are designing an opinion survey or a randomized survey experiment and need the sample, the treatments, the weights and the analysis plan fixed before the questionnaire is fielded.

Analyzing Poll or Election Data Poll microdata or election returns are in hand, and the weights, the geographic units and the model for votes or attitudes need to be set up, run and checked.

Building a Country-Year Panel You are working with countries or states observed over years, and the unit effects, the standard errors and the handling of few units need to be settled before models are compared.

Defending a Causal Claim A reviewer or committee has asked what identifies an institutional or policy effect, or whether the parallel trends, cutoff or instrument assumptions behind your estimate hold.

RESEARCH CONTEXT

Research Designs and Data We Work With in Political Science Research

Political data come from polls, ballots, legislatures and country statistics, and each source has a structure that decides how estimates can be read.

01
Opinion and Election Surveys

Weighted national or panel surveys of vote choice, trust and attitudes, adjusted for nonresponse and, in online panels, for selection.

02
Aggregate Election Returns

Precinct, district or constituency vote counts, where percentages are bounded and neighboring units resemble each other.

03
Survey Experiments

Randomized wording, information or vignette treatments, including conjoint and list experiments, in which randomization supports a causal reading.

04
Country-Year Panels

Countries or states observed across years, with a limited number of units, serial correlation and slow-moving institutional variables.

05
Legislative and Voting Records

Roll-call votes or party manifestos used to place legislators or parties on a scale from many yes-or-no items, with absences and lopsided votes carrying little information.

06
Event and Conflict Data

Counts of protests, coups or conflict events by place and month, with many zeros, overdispersion and clustering in space.

METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Statistical Issues We Consider in Political Science Research

These checks come first in political data, because weights, the structure of a panel and the identification of an effect can change a conclusion more than the model does.

Weights and Poll Design Poll estimates are weighted for sampling and nonresponse, and margins of error come from the design, not from the raw number of respondents, so an unweighted tabulation is not reported as the electorate.

Serial Correlation and Unit Effects Country-year data are correlated within a country and over time. Standard errors are clustered, unit and time effects are chosen for the question, and caution applies when the number of countries is small.

Identification of Institutional Effects For a reform in your data, adoption dates, pre-reform trends in adopting and non-adopting units and reforms that arrived at the same time are examined before an effect is named, and a controlled regression alone is reported as an association.

Bounded and Skewed Outcomes Vote shares lie between zero and one and conflict counts are often overdispersed with many zeros, so the model follows the outcome's scale and predictions stay within the range the outcome can take.

Aggregate Data and Individual Behavior A relationship across districts does not show how individual voters behaved. Claims about individuals from aggregate returns are limited, and ecological inference is used only with its assumptions stated.

Experiments Analyzed as Assigned Survey experiments are analyzed by assigned condition. Respondents who failed an attention check placed after the treatment are examined separately, because dropping them can undo the randomization, while a check placed before treatment can define the sample in advance.

STATISTICAL METHODS

Methods Selected for the Research Question and Study Design

Each method family is chosen for the outcome and the data structure of your study, and the line under each title explains why it is used with political data.

Regression & Predictive Modeling

Vote choice, ordered attitudes and overdispersed event counts each get a model for their own scale, with the survey design carried into the variance.

Explore Regression & Predictive Modeling
Longitudinal & Multilevel Analysis

Country-year data support fixed or random effects with clustered errors, and a reform adopted in some units is compared with units that did not adopt it.

Explore Longitudinal & Multilevel Analysis
Clinical, Survival & Epidemiological

A vote margin that decides an outcome supports a discontinuity design, and a plausible instrument supports an instrumental variable analysis, each with its assumptions shown.

Explore Clinical, Survival & Epidemiological
Structural & Latent Variable Modeling

Legislator ideal points are estimated with item response models of roll-call votes, and voter types are drawn from latent classes of survey responses.

Explore Structural & Latent Variable Modeling
Comparative & Hypothesis Testing

A randomized survey experiment is read first as the difference between conditions with its interval, before any covariate adjustment or subgroup comparison.

Explore Comparative & Hypothesis Testing
Bayesian & Computational Methods

Opinion in small areas borrows strength across places in multilevel models with poststratification, and bootstrapped intervals suit statistics without simple variance formulas.

DELIVERABLES

Statistical Outputs Prepared for Your Research

The outputs follow the structure of political data, from the review of the weights and unit identifiers to the scripts that regenerate every estimate.

Data & Study Review The weights and sampling variables, the country and year identifiers, the coding of the treatment or cutoff and the pattern of missing values are reviewed before any model is fitted.

Statistical Analysis Survey-weighted, panel or quasi-experimental models as agreed, with checks of the identifying assumptions, robustness to specification and the planned sensitivity analyses.

Effect Estimates & Uncertainty Weighted estimates, predicted probabilities and treatment effects with confidence intervals that reflect the design, and the pre-trend or placebo checks beside them.

Tables & Figures Weighted tables with unweighted counts, regression tables with clustered errors, event-study and cutoff plots, and coefficient plots with intervals.

Statistical Interpretation Causal wording is used only where the design identifies an effect, population claims are limited to the population the weights represent, and aggregate findings are not read as individual behavior.

Analysis Files Scripts or syntax that declare the survey design and regenerate each table and figure, prepared in the form a journal's replication archive asks for.

REPORTING

Reporting Political Science Research

The standard follows the type of data behind your paper, and each is applied only where it fits.

Survey response rates and outcome codes are calculated with the AAPOR Standard Definitions, 10th edition, and the AAPOR Transparency Initiative sets out the elements of a survey that should be disclosed, among them the sampling frame, the weighting and the question wording. Political science journals commonly prepare manuscripts to the APSA Style Manual and ask for replication materials, so the data preparation and the code are organized to be deposited alongside the paper. Methods text states the weights, the clustering, the identifying assumptions and the checks that probe them, and survey experiments are reported by assigned condition with the treatment materials. The requirements of your target journal are then checked on top.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

How the Analysis May Look in Practice

An illustration of how a survey experiment moves from a weighted panel file to an estimate that keeps the randomization intact.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · BALLOT MEASURE SURVEY EXPERIMENT · UNITED STATES

A political research center randomly showed respondents one of two descriptions of a ballot measure and asked whether support differed between the descriptions and by party identification.

The sample came from an online panel with weights for age, education and region, and some respondents had failed an attention check placed after the description. Before outcomes were examined, we fixed an analysis by assigned condition for all respondents, with those who failed the check examined in a separate sensitivity analysis, not dropped from the main estimate. The weighted difference in support between the descriptions was the primary estimate, and the party interaction was labeled exploratory because the experiment was not designed to detect it. Standard errors followed the weighting, and the limits of a nonprobability panel were stated in the wording of population claims.

Outcome: The center received the weighted difference in support with its 95% confidence interval, the exploratory interaction estimates, the sensitivity analysis, a methods paragraph with AAPOR-style disclosure and the scripts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About Statistical Analysis for Political Science Research

Short answers to what political scientists ask before sharing a study, from method choice and survey experiments to panel errors, scope, confidentiality and the assessment.

Political science studies most often use survey-weighted regression, panel models with clustered errors, quasi-experimental designs such as difference-in-differences, discontinuity and instruments, item response models for scaling, and count models for events, chosen by how the data were collected and what an effect must be identified from. The Statistical Methods pages describe each of these families.

Randomization supports the comparison between conditions in the sample, and weights matter when the result is meant to describe a population. The two can give different estimates when the effect varies across respondents, so we report the unweighted and weighted differences with their intervals, state which one answers your question and explain any gap between them.

Observations from one country are correlated across years, so standard errors are clustered by country, and by time as well where shocks are shared. When the number of countries is small, standard errors clustered by country can understate uncertainty, and we use small-sample corrections or resampling and show how much the conclusion depends on them. The unit and time effects are chosen from the question being asked.

Studies of voters, parties, institutions and states are scoped here, while the evaluation of a specific public program or policy intervention is closer to Public Policy & Administration. A study of how an electoral reform affected turnout sits between them, and we scope it by the design and the data, not by the label.

Survey files, voter-level records and project materials are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. Researcher names and institutions are not used publicly without permission. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared.
