METHOD OVERVIEW
What Is Moderated Mediation?
Moderated mediation, also called conditional process analysis, examines whether the indirect effect of an exposure on an outcome through a mediator depends on a moderator. The moderator may change the path from exposure to mediator, the path from mediator to outcome, or both. The indirect effect is then conditional, with a different value at each moderator value, estimated with bootstrap confidence intervals, and the index of moderated mediation tests whether it changes across them. The model combines the assumptions of mediation and of moderation, and a causal reading needs both. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides moderated mediation analysis within your study design, with the relevant checks, effect estimates, uncertainty measures, interpretation and publication-ready reporting.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
When Is Moderated Mediation Appropriate?
Conditional process models fit a question about how a mechanism differs by person or context, and these are the research situations in which researchers most often ask us to plan or confirm one.
Mechanism Differing by Subgroup An intervention is believed to work through a mediator more strongly for some participants, such as those with greater severity, and the team wants to test that difference.
Deciding Which Path Is Moderated Theory suggests the moderator acts on the exposure-mediator path, the mediator-outcome path or both, and that choice defines the model and the effect that is estimated.
Index Instead of Separate Tests Indirect effects were estimated at low and high moderator values and only one was significant, but whether they differ is a separate question that the index answers.
Reviewing a Conditional Analysis A conditional process model was run from a template and its output is hard to defend. Independent Statistical Review rechecks the index and the conditional effects.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH
How We Apply Moderated Mediation
Within the family of Regression & Predictive Modeling, a conditional process model is specified from theory first, because each added path adds assumptions and demands on sample size.
Model Specification From Theory We fix which path or paths the moderator acts on before estimation. Moderating both paths makes the indirect effect curved in the moderator, so one index no longer summarizes it.
The Index of Moderated Mediation Whether the indirect effect depends on the moderator is tested by the index with a bootstrap interval. Two conditional effects, one significant and one not, do not make a test of difference.
Probing at Meaningful Values Conditional indirect effects are reported at substantively chosen moderator values, such as clinical cut points, not by habit at plus and minus one standard deviation, which can lie outside the data.
Stacked Assumptions and Size The confounding and time-order assumptions of mediation apply, plus those of the moderator and its products. Samples must support the product terms, and small ones give unstable intervals.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive
As part of our Quantitative Data Analysis service, the conditional model is delivered with the estimates, checks and files needed to report and defend it.
Data & Variable Review Variable timing, the scoring of the moderator, missing data, and the covariates for both the mediator and outcome equations are reviewed before the model structure is fixed.
Method-Specific Checks Each equation's residuals, curvature that mimics interaction, influential cases, sparse regions of the moderator and the stability of the bootstrap intervals are examined.
Statistical Results Conditional indirect effects with bootstrap 95% confidence intervals, the index of moderated mediation with its interval, conditional direct effects and the path coefficients.
Publication-Ready Tables & Figures A conceptual and statistical diagram, a table of conditional effects and a plot of the indirect effect across the moderator, formatted to APA 7, AGReMA or the journal's requirements.
Interpretation The result states how the indirect effect varies with the moderator and on what assumptions, with causal wording only where the design supports it.
Reproducible Analysis Files SPSS or SAS syntax calling Hayes's PROCESS macro, R scripts or Mplus inputs reproduce every conditional effect, so the analysis can be rerun if the data change.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS
When Another Method May Be More Appropriate
We choose the model by what the question asks of the pathway. These methods fit better when no moderator is needed, the moderated effect is direct, constructs are latent or participants are nested.
01
Mediation Analysis
When the mechanism is expected to be similar for everyone, a simple mediation model rests on fewer assumptions and needs less data than a conditional process model.
02
Moderation Analysis
When the moderated effect is direct and no mediator is theorized, an interaction model answers the question without the extra paths and their added assumptions.
03
Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)
When the moderator or mediator is a multi-item construct, a structural model fits a latent interaction, avoiding the measurement error in products of scale scores.
04
Multilevel SEM (MSEM)
When participants are nested in teams or sites, the pathway can differ inside a team and across teams, and a multilevel structural model estimates each part.
CASE EXAMPLE
How We Work in Practice
An illustration of how a conditional mechanism question moves from a planned model to an index that can be reported with its limits.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · VETERAN SERVICES PROGRAM EVALUATION · UNITED STATES
A veterans service nonprofit asked whether peer mentoring was related to weekly work hours through job-search confidence, and whether that pathway differed by time since military separation.
Mentoring was not randomly assigned, so the plan used a conditional process model with the moderator on the first path and baseline covariates in both equations, and described results as associations under stated assumptions. Conditional indirect effects were set at prespecified values of six months, two years and five years since separation, not at plus and minus one standard deviation. The primary test was the index of moderated mediation with a bootstrap interval, not a comparison of which conditional effects were significant. With a modest sample, the interval was to carry the interpretation.
Outcome: The nonprofit received the index and the conditional indirect effects with bootstrap 95% confidence intervals, a plot across time since separation, a statement of assumptions and the analysis syntax.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from a researcher who needed the model and its assumptions documented for a protocol and ethics submission.
“We knew Moderated Mediation was probably the right direction, but how to estimate and report the indirect effect rather than relying on separate significance tests was where we were stuck. OnlineSPSS reviewed the data and model rather than just rerunning the software output. The final calculation documented the assumptions clearly enough for the protocol and ethics submission.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Moderated Mediation
Short answers to what researchers ask before a conditional process model, from the index and probing values to confidentiality and the assessment process.
What does the index of moderated mediation test?
It tests whether the indirect effect changes with the moderator. With one moderated path and a linear moderator, it is the change in the indirect effect per unit of the moderator, and a bootstrap interval that excludes zero indicates dependence. A significant indirect effect at one moderator value and a non-significant one at another do not by themselves show that they differ.
Which moderator values should I report?
Values that mean something in your field, such as clinical thresholds, policy cut points or percentiles of the observed range, chosen before the results are seen. Plus and minus one standard deviation is a habit, not a justification, and can fall outside the data for skewed variables. A plot of the conditional indirect effect with its interval shows the whole range.
Do I need moderated mediation, or just mediation and moderation?
Moderated mediation answers whether a mechanism differs by moderator. Separate mediation and moderation models answer different questions, whether a pathway exists and whether an effect varies, not whether the indirect effect depends on the moderator. With no mediator in the theory, moderation is simpler, and with no moderator, mediation is.
Can you review an analysis that has already been completed?
Yes, we can review a completed conditional process analysis before submission or a response to reviewers. We check which paths were moderated, the index and its interval, the probed moderator values, the assumptions stated, the sample size behind the product terms and the causal wording, and confirm clearly what stands or needs to change.
How do you protect my dataset and research confidentiality?
Your dataset, output files and any protocol or analysis plan are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
