METHOD OVERVIEW
What Is Meta-Regression?
Meta-regression relates the effect sizes of the studies in a meta-analysis to study-level characteristics, called moderators, such as mean age, dose, follow-up length or risk-of-bias rating, to explore why results differ. Each study contributes one observation, weighted by its precision and, in a random-effects model, by the between-study variance, so a coefficient describes an association across studies, not an effect within participants. The method needs enough studies for each covariate, and moderators are best prespecified. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides meta-regression analysis within your review design, with the relevant checks, effect estimates, uncertainty measures, interpretation and publication-ready reporting.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
When Is Meta-Regression Appropriate?
Meta-regression fits studies whose effects differ, and these are the situations in which researchers most often ask us to plan or confirm a moderator analysis in a meta-analysis.
Explaining Differences in Effects A meta-analysis shows substantial heterogeneity, and a prespecified characteristic, such as dose or population, may explain part of it.
Trends Across Study Characteristics The question is whether the effect grows or shrinks with a continuous study-level variable, such as treatment intensity or follow-up time.
Effects Linked to Study Quality Trials differ in allocation concealment or blinding, and the question is whether effects are larger in studies at higher risk of bias.
Reviewing a Moderator Analysis A meta-regression exists, perhaps with many covariates, and a reviewer has questioned its power. Independent Statistical Review re-examines the model and the moderator coding.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH
How We Apply Meta-Regression
Within the family of Evidence Synthesis & Meta-Research, moderators are examined only when there are enough studies and a prior reason to expect them to matter.
Moderators and Study Numbers We confirm moderators were chosen on theory and coded before results were seen, with about ten studies per covariate. Fewer leave the model underpowered and prone to overfit.
Study-Level Interpretation A coefficient for mean age shows how effects vary across studies, not within participants, and the two associations can differ. We word findings as study-level, never individual.
Random-Effects Estimation We fit random effects meta-regression, report residual heterogeneity and apply the Hartung-Knapp adjustment, as Wald tests are too liberal with few studies. We check collinearity.
Multiplicity and Causal Wording Testing many characteristics inflates false positives, so moderators are few and prespecified, and post hoc results stay exploratory. An across-study association is not causal.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive
As part of our Meta-Analysis & Evidence Synthesis service, the moderator analysis is delivered with the models, checks and files needed to report and defend it.
Data & Variable Review Moderator coding, the unit of analysis and missing moderator values are reviewed, and studies with several effect sizes or shared participants are flagged before modeling.
Method-Specific Checks Studies per covariate, collinearity among moderators, influential studies and residual heterogeneity are examined, with permutation tests as a check when studies are few.
Statistical Results Coefficients with 95% confidence intervals, the omnibus test of the moderators, residual tau-squared and the heterogeneity explained, read with its uncertainty.
Publication-Ready Tables & Figures Bubble plots of effect size against a moderator, coefficient tables and subgroup forest plots, formatted in line with PRISMA 2020 or the journal's requirements.
Interpretation The result is written as an association across studies, with its uncertainty and the limits that few studies impose, and the certainty of the evidence considered where relevant.
Reproducible Analysis Files R scripts using metafor, Stata do-files or SPSS syntax come with the coded moderator file, so each coefficient can be traced and refitted as studies are added.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS
When Another Method May Be More Appropriate
We choose the method by what the question asks of the studies. A moderator analysis is one way to explain heterogeneity, and these methods answer related but different questions.
01
Meta-Analysis
When the aim is one summary effect with its heterogeneity described, a pooled estimate and a prediction interval answer the question without a moderator model.
02
Individual Participant Data (IPD) Meta-Analysis
When participant-level data are obtainable, effect modification by age or severity can be estimated within trials, avoiding the ecological bias of study-level moderators.
03
Network Meta-Analysis (NMA)
When the apparent moderator is the treatment itself, because studies tested different drugs, a network compares them jointly under its own assumptions.
04
SWiM (Synthesis Without Meta-Analysis)
When studies are too different to pool at all, grouping them by the characteristic and reporting each group openly is more defensible than a regression the data cannot bear.
CASE EXAMPLE
How We Work in Practice
An illustration of how a moderator question moves from a prespecified plan to an interpretable, appropriately cautious result.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · EARLY LITERACY PROGRAM EVALUATION · UNITED STATES
An evidence center at a nonprofit organization was planning a meta-analysis of trials of an early literacy program and asked whether the effect depends on weekly hours of instruction.
The analysis plan, written before outcomes were extracted, named one primary moderator, weekly hours of instruction, and a random-effects meta-regression with the Hartung-Knapp adjustment. With about twenty trials, we advised against adding the other characteristics to the same model, since few studies per covariate invites overfitting. Teacher training was strongly correlated with hours, so it was examined separately and labeled exploratory. Two reports of one trial were merged into a single entry. The coefficient was interpreted as an association across trials, not as the effect of more hours on a child.
Outcome: The center received the coefficient for weekly hours with its 95% confidence interval, the residual heterogeneity, a bubble plot, the labeled exploratory results and the analysis scripts.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from an evidence synthesis researcher who needed multiplicity handled and the assumptions documented for a protocol submission.
“We knew Meta-Regression was probably the right direction, but how to handle multiple comparisons without inflating false positives was where we were stuck. OnlineSPSS reviewed the data and model rather than just rerunning the software output. The final calculation documented the assumptions clearly enough for the protocol and ethics submission.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Meta-Regression
Short answers to what researchers ask before modeling moderators, from study numbers and ecological bias to confidentiality and the assessment process.
How many studies do I need for a meta-regression?
A common rule of thumb is about ten studies for each covariate, and a meta-analysis with fewer than ten studies rarely supports a meta-regression at all. With fewer, one study can drive the slope and several moderators overfit. Ten studies per covariate does not ensure adequate power, which also depends on how widely the moderator varies across studies and on the residual heterogeneity. We say plainly when a descriptive table of studies by characteristic is the more honest option.
Can I read a moderator as a participant-level effect?
No. A study-level moderator, such as mean age, shows how effects vary across studies, and that association can differ from, or even reverse, the association within participants. This is ecological bias. Questions about who benefits need participant-level data, and otherwise the finding is worded as an association across studies.
Should I use meta-regression or a subgroup analysis?
A subgroup analysis is a meta-regression with one categorical moderator, so the two ask the same kind of question. Subgroups suit a categorical moderator with enough studies in each group, while meta-regression handles continuous moderators and several covariates jointly. Both compare studies observationally, so the moderators should be prespecified to be credible.
Can you review an analysis that has already been completed?
Yes, we can review a completed meta-regression before submission or a response to reviewers. We check how the moderators were chosen and coded, the number of studies per covariate, the model and its inference, collinearity, the interpretation and any post hoc searches, and confirm what stands or needs to change.
How do you protect my dataset and research confidentiality?
Your coded study data, output files and any protocol or analysis plan are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
