What Is MATLAB Used For in Research?

MATLAB is a numerical computing environment and programming language from MathWorks, built around matrices and widely used in engineering, signal processing, biomechanics and computational science. Researchers write their own analysis code in it, run simulations and handle signal or sensor data, with the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox supplying regression, hypothesis tests and predictive models. Custom code gives full control, and it also means that array dimensions, random seeds and toolbox versions decide whether a result can be reproduced. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides a MATLAB statistical analysis service in which an in-house PhD-level statistician carries out the agreed analysis in MATLAB, working from your files.

WHEN TO ENGAGE

Four Reasons Researchers Ask Us to Work in MATLAB

MATLAB data analysis is usually requested for a specific reason: custom code to verify, a simulation to design, a model to validate or a workflow to turn into a script.

Custom Code to Verify The analysis lives in scripts you wrote or inherited, and a statistician has to confirm that the code computes what the methods section describes, with estimates reported alongside their uncertainty.

Simulation Study to Design A Monte Carlo or resampling study needs a defensible design, a justified number of replications and fixed random streams, so that MATLAB simulation analysis can be repeated exactly.

Prediction Model to Validate A model built for prediction needs honest validation, with data splits that respect repeated measures from the same participant, so that MATLAB predictive modeling reports an accuracy that holds for participants the model has not seen.

Command-Window Workflow The work exists as commands typed interactively and has to become scripts and functions that another person can run from the raw data to the final figures.

ANALYSES IN MATLAB

Analyses Carried Out in MATLAB for Your Data

Each analysis follows the structure of your data and the question asked, and its card links to the method page where the choice of approach is explained.

Monte Carlo Simulation

The number of replications is justified, random streams are fixed, and results are summarized with Monte Carlo standard errors, not only with means across replicates.

Explore Monte Carlo Simulation
Bootstrapping

Resampling follows the dependence in the data, by participant or by block for correlated series, and the interval type is chosen to suit the statistic.

Explore Bootstrapping
Time Series Analysis

Series are examined for trend, seasonality and autocorrelation before a model is chosen, and forecasts are judged on data held out in time order.

Explore Time Series Analysis
Multiple Linear Regression

Models are fitted on tables whose rows are observations, with coefficient intervals, residual diagnostics and influential points examined before the model is used.

Explore Multiple Linear Regression
Non-Parametric Regression

Smoothers and splines are fitted with the smoothing parameter chosen by cross-validation, and the fitted curve is shown with pointwise intervals, not as a bare line.

Explore Non-Parametric Regression
Principal Component Analysis (PCA)

Scaling is decided by a stated rule, the number of components is judged from the scree and from reconstruction on held-out data, and loadings are read cautiously.

COMMON MATLAB ISSUES

Where MATLAB Analyses Go Wrong Without an Error

MATLAB runs almost any array arithmetic, so the faults that matter produce plausible numbers, and each check below is made before a result is reported.

Row and Column Orientation A vector stored as a row where a column is expected can change what a function computes without a message. The size of each array is checked against observations and variables at every step.

Default Dimension of Functions Functions such as mean and std work along the first non-singleton dimension, so one call can average across participants or across variables depending on shape. The dimension is named explicitly.

Implicit Expansion Adding a row vector to a column vector returns a full matrix instead of an error, a frequent source of results that look reasonable. Shapes are asserted before the arithmetic is trusted.

Missing Values and NaN One NaN spreads through many summary functions, and fitting routines drop incomplete rows differently, so missing values are handled explicitly and the number of rows used is reported.

Seeds and Random Streams Simulation, bootstrap and cross-validation results change between runs unless the generator and seed are set, including inside parallel loops, and both are recorded with the code.

Toolbox and Release Dependencies A function that belongs to a toolbox, or that changed between releases, can stop a colleague's run, so the toolboxes and the release the code was written in are documented.

DELIVERABLES

What You Receive From a MATLAB Analysis

The files follow a runnable MATLAB project, agreed in the scope and provided where applicable, so that you can regenerate every reported number from the raw data.

Scripts and Functions Scripts and functions in place of command-window work, each with a stated purpose, so a colleague can read and rerun them in order.

Main Run Script One main script that runs the steps from the raw data to the final tables and figures, with a short readme on the expected folder layout.

Data Files and Dictionary The data files used, in the format agreed, with a dictionary of variables, units and missing-value codes behind the analysis.

Toolbox and Release Record The MATLAB release and every toolbox the code needs are listed, so that a coauthor can check their setup before running anything.

Figures and Tables Publication-ready figures and tables in the formats agreed, regenerated by the code, with effect estimates, intervals and sample sizes shown.

Results Notes Notes that explain each estimate, its uncertainty and its limits, so that you can describe the analysis accurately in your own methods section.

OTHER PLATFORMS

When Another Platform May Be More Appropriate

MATLAB suits matrix-based and signal-oriented research, and a project built around other data or other collaborators may be better served by a different platform.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

How a MATLAB Analysis May Look in Practice

An illustration of how a prediction study built on sensor windows moves from leaked folds to a validation that can be rerun.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · WEARABLE SENSOR SIGNAL RESEARCH · UNITED STATES

An engineering group developing a walking-speed estimate from wearable accelerometer signals wanted to know how closely it agreed with a reference measure in participants it had not seen.

The signals had been cut into short windows, and the group’s cross-validation routine split those windows at random. Windows from the same participant therefore appeared in both the training and the test folds, so the agreement was optimistic. The folds were rebuilt so that each participant belonged to one fold only, the random generator and seed were fixed and recorded, and the dependence among windows from one person was carried into the intervals. A mismatch between a row and a column vector in a feature step was found by checking array sizes at each stage, and the whole workflow was turned from command-window steps into one runnable script.

Outcome: The group received the mean error and the limits of agreement with their 95% confidence intervals, the runnable scripts, a record of the seeds and a list of the toolboxes required.

RESEARCHER VOICE

What Researchers Say

Feedback from a quantitative scientist on matrix orientation in custom code and an analysis returned without rebuilding it elsewhere.

“We already had most of the project in MATLAB, but our main issue was matrix orientation and dimension choices changing calculations in the custom code. The team worked from the files we already had, cleaned up the workflow, and returned the analysis in a form we could reproduce. I especially appreciated not having to rebuild everything in another program.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About MATLAB Analysis for Research

Short answers to what researchers ask before sharing MATLAB code, from the analyses we run and existing scripts to reproducible simulations, confidentiality and the assessment.

Yes, for many designs: MATLAB statistics consulting at OnlineSPSS covers regression, simulation and resampling studies, time-series analysis, multivariate methods and predictive models, including those built on signal or sensor data. The choice follows your research question and the structure of the data, and it is confirmed during the assessment.

We work with it. Your scripts, functions and data files are read before anything is changed, sound logic is kept, and code written partly with an AI coding assistant is checked line by line like any other. A finished analysis can also be checked through Independent Statistical Review, which reports on the code without rewriting it.

Yes, provided they have MATLAB and the toolboxes it needs. The code is delivered with the release it was written in and a list of required toolboxes, and its paths and inputs are set so that it runs from the raw data. The list is agreed at the start, so a missing toolbox does not surface at the end.

Built-in toolbox functions wherever they fit the model, because they are documented and tested, and custom code only where the design needs something they do not provide. Each custom function is checked against a known result before it is used on your data.

Your data files, scripts and results are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.

You share your research question, design and relevant materials, such as the data and any existing code, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins.
