Structuring a Dissertation Introduction
Aims the Later Analysis Can Answer

The dissertation introduction chapter sets up what the analysis must later deliver. When the problem is sized with evidence and each aim names what is measured, the study has something definite to answer.

AIMS AND ANALYSIS

Introduction Choices That Shape the Analysis

What the opening pages commit to is what the final chapters have to answer, so these choices are statistical as well as rhetorical.

A dissertation introduction chapter establishes the problem, the gap in the evidence, the aims and the scope, and then outlines the chapters that follow. The framing and the argument are the researcher’s own. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, supports the statistical component through an in-house PhD-level statistician, so that stated aims can be matched to an analysis able to answer them.

Problem Sized With Evidence A problem statement and aims are stronger when the problem is quantified: a prevalence, the size of an earlier effect or the spread of outcomes, each with its source, year, population and measure. Figures built on different definitions are not set side by side without comment.

A Gap Defined by the Evidence The gap is described by what earlier estimates leave uncertain, such as a population not yet studied, results that conflict or intervals too wide to guide practice. The reader then sees what the new data can add that the existing figures cannot.

Scope and the Population Spoken For The stated setting, period and population limit what the results can later be said to represent. Fixing the scope on the opening pages keeps the final chapters from claiming more than the sample supports.

Constructs Defined as Measured Key concepts receive working definitions that match the instruments or records to be used, with the scale on which each is measured. The same wording then carries through the methodology, the tables and the abstract.

A Roadmap That Mirrors the Analysis The introduction chapter structure ends with an outline that lists, for each aim, where it is examined and where its result appears. A reader can follow one aim from the first page through the analysis to its answer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About the Introduction

Departments differ on how much of the outcome and the analysis an opening chapter should preview.

Not as a rule: findings belong in the results chapter, although some programs allow a short overview of what the study found. The introduction states the aims and outlines the design, and the later chapters report what the analysis showed. Follow the template your department provides.

Usually in one sentence at most, such as saying that groups will be compared or that a model will relate an outcome to its predictors. The choice of model, its assumptions and the software are justified later, in the methods. What the introduction names should match what the methods chapter then describes, so a reader never meets two accounts of the same analysis.

Your dissertation materials and project details are handled confidentially. Project information is not published, and researcher names and institutions are not used publicly without permission. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.

You share your research question, design and relevant materials, such as a protocol, an analysis plan or a dataset, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
