What Is a Statistical Consultation for a Dissertation?
A dissertation statistical consultation is a scoped review of specific decisions in your own analysis, with each answer documented, and not a course in statistics. It deals with questions that cannot be answered in general, because the answer depends on your design, your data and what your committee expects: whether a model suits the structure of the data, what a coefficient means, which approach a reader will find defensible. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, takes these questions from doctoral and master’s researchers through a statistically trained Research Coordinator, and an in-house PhD-level statistician examines each one against your materials and sets out the answer with its reasons. The dissertation remains your own work.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
Questions Only Your Own Data Can Answer
A general account of any method is easy to find, and the need for a consultation begins where the answer depends on your design.
A Choice Between Approaches Two analyses seem possible and your supervisor is unsure, so the question is which suits your design, with the trade-offs explained.
Output You Cannot Read A table is on the screen and its meaning, or one figure in it, is unclear, and the answer depends on how your variables were coded.
A Committee Member's Query A reader has asked about an assumption or a missing analysis, and the reply needs to rest on evidence from your own data.
A Plan Before You Commit An analysis is about to be fixed in a proposal, and the aim is to learn what a statistician would question while it can still change.
WHAT A CONSULTATION COVERS
Subjects a Consultation Can Take Up
The subject is always a decision in your own project, and the answer is given in terms of your variables, your sample and your design.
Design Questions
Whether the design can answer the research question, how the observations are structured and what sample the analysis needs, drawing on Research Planning & Study Design.
Method Clarification
Dissertation method clarification explains why a method fits, what it assumes and what it estimates, in terms of your own variables and not in general.
Model Review
A model already fitted is examined for its fit to the design and for the reading of its coefficients, with the analysis itself carried out through Quantitative Data Analysis where more is needed.
Committee Questions
A statistical query from a committee or reviewer, whether a doubt about an assumption or a request for more analysis, is traced to the model and the data, so that the reply cites evidence and not opinion.
Interpretation
What an estimate and its interval can and cannot say within the design, so that the discussion you compose does not claim more than the data allow.
Reporting Guidance
How a result should appear in a table and in the methods text, with the tables prepared through Results Reporting & Interpretation where wanted.
COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS
Misreadings a Consultation Often Corrects
Each one comes from applying a general rule to a specific design, and the correction depends on what the dataset actually contains.
A Coefficient Read in Isolation A regression coefficient is interpreted as an effect on its own, although the other variables in the model change what it represents.
Significance Read as Importance A small p-value is taken as a large effect, in a sample big enough to detect differences that matter little in practice.
Standardized and Raw Mixed Up Standardized coefficients are compared across groups with different spreads, although they depend on how variable each sample happens to be.
A Rule of Thumb Applied Mechanically A cutoff for fit, reliability or sample size is used because a source gave it, without asking whether it suits this model and design.
Defaults Taken as Choices An option is left at its default, such as the handling of missing cases, and the dissertation reports the result as if a choice had been made.
Terms Used Loosely Words such as effect, predict and control for are used with meanings the analysis does not support, and an attentive reader notices.
DELIVERABLES
What You Keep After a Consultation
Every answer arrives as a document framed in the terms of your own variables, and it stays useful after the question is settled.
Answer on Record A recorded answer to each question put, giving the reasoning in terms of your variables and design so that it can be read again later by you or by your supervisor.
Decision Note A note of the options considered, the choice made and the reason, which you can attach to the methods chapter or show a supervisor.
Annotated Output Your own output marked up to show which numbers answer which question and how each of them is to be read.
Methods Sources Methodological references suited to your question, to cite in the methods chapter where a method needs support from the literature.
Scoped Follow-Up Where committee requests for reanalysis, or the consultation itself, show that the analysis should change, the revised model and tables are scoped and agreed before they are produced.
Outline for a Reply An outline of the statistical points raised by the committee's comments, matched to the output, for you to check and incorporate.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
A Coefficient That Changed Direction
An illustration of a consultation that answered a single query from a committee member.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · HEARING AID UPTAKE RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
A doctoral researcher in audiology had fitted a logistic regression for hearing aid uptake among older adults, and a committee member asked why the coefficient for age changed direction when household income was added to the model.
The question could not be answered in general, so the consultation started from the model and the data. Age and income were related in the sample, and the age coefficient described a different comparison once income was held constant, which the researcher had read as a contradiction. The correlations between the predictors were examined, the standard errors were checked for signs of instability, the two models were compared side by side, and the explanation was set out in terms of the research question and not as a rule. The explanation avoided a causal reading of an observational comparison.
Outcome: The researcher received a recorded answer, the side-by-side models with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals, an annotated output and an outline for the reply to the committee.
This example does not describe a real client or project. We never share details of actual client work, in line with the confidentiality we promise every researcher. This illustrative example is included to show the type, scope, and standard of work involved in this kind of analysis.
SOFTWARE
The Program Your Output Came From
A consultation works with the files and output you already have, in the program you used, and not with a program chosen for it.
HOW WE ASSESS YOUR PROJECT
We Review Your Actual Research
Your assessment is based on a review of your actual research materials and analytical requirements, not a generic project category.
You Submit Your Project Details
Share whatever is available at the current stage, such as the research aim, protocol or proposal, dataset, variable list, manuscript or statistical requirements.
We Review Your Research and Define the Scope
Your statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the materials to understand the study design, research questions, data structure, analytical requirements and expected deliverables. If clarification is needed, additional documents or information can be requested before the assessment is finalized.
Your Analysis Is Completed and Delivered
Once the scope and fixed project fee are agreed, the in-house statistician completes the work and the Research Coordinator remains the communication point through delivery, with the analysis, deliverables and timeline as agreed.
RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITY
A Consultation Informs Your Decisions, It Does Not Replace Them
A consultation gives you statistical reasoning to decide with, and the decisions about your research stay where they began, with you.
Agreed Statistical Support OnlineSPSS provides the agreed methodological, analytical and statistical reporting support, defined in a scope that is confirmed before any work begins.
No Intellectual Contribution OnlineSPSS does not claim any intellectual contribution to your dissertation. Authorship remains the researcher's, including every sentence that reports a result.
Your Research Decisions Which analysis you adopt, how you describe it, what you conclude and how you answer your committee are your decisions, with overall responsibility for the dissertation.
Confidential Handling Research data and project details are handled confidentially, project information is not published, and an NDA is available where required.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Consulting on a Dissertation Analysis
A consultation sits between a methods textbook and a full analysis, so its edges on both sides deserve a clear statement.
How is dissertation committee statistics feedback handled?
OnlineSPSS treats dissertation committee statistics feedback as a scoped review of a specific statistical decision in your own project: an in-house statistician examines the comment against your design and data and answers it on record, with the reasons. Questions and answers pass through your Research Coordinator, who remains your point of contact until the answers are delivered.
Is a consultation the same as learning statistics from the beginning?
No. A consultation answers questions about your own analysis and explains as much as the answer needs. A course or a methods text is the better route for learning a subject from the beginning. What a consultation adds is the link to your design: why a method suits your data, how its output is to be read and what it can support.
What should I prepare before a consultation?
Your research questions, a description of the design, the variables involved and any output or data file that prompted the question. For a question about design, a proposal draft is enough. With these in hand, the question can be answered about your project and not in general terms, and nothing has to be polished or complete beforehand.
Can a consultation lead to a full analysis?
Yes, if more is needed. When a consultation shows that a model should be rerun or a table rebuilt, that work is scoped as an analysis, and its deliverables, timeline and fixed project fee are confirmed before it begins, as for any project. You decide whether to go ahead, and the analysis then follows the agreed scope.
How do you protect my research data and confidentiality?
Your data and project details are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. Researcher names and institutions are not used publicly without permission. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your question, the design and any output or comment that prompted it, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The work to be done, the deliverables, the timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
