METHOD OVERVIEW

What Is Discourse Analysis?

Discourse analysis methodology studies language in use: how talk and text construct versions of the world, perform social action and position people in specific contexts. It asks how an account is built and what it does, not what participants really think. The variants answer different questions, since discursive psychology examines how everyday accounts manage blame and accountability, critical discourse analysis links texts to power and ideology, and Foucauldian approaches trace how discourses make subject positions available. The data are often naturally occurring talk or documents, and the transcription detail depends on the variant. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, supports discourse studies with a stated tradition and documented readings, while the argument stays yours.

WHEN TO ENGAGE

When Is Discourse Analysis Appropriate?

Discourse analysis fits questions about how language shapes a topic or does social work, and these are the situations in which researchers most often ask us to apply or confirm it.

Naturally Occurring Talk or Texts The data are recorded conversations, meetings, policy documents or media items, and the question is how language shapes a topic, not what speakers privately believe.

Interviews Read as Constructions Interview or focus group talk is treated as action performed in that setting, so the study asks how accounts are built, not whether they are accurate.

Discursive Tradition Undecided The team is unsure whether discursive psychology, critical discourse analysis or a Foucauldian approach fits, and each asks a different question of the material.

Reviewing a Completed Analysis A discourse analysis is written up, and a reviewer asked whether the readings are warranted. Independent Statistical Review compares the extracts with the claims drawn from them.

ANALYTICAL APPROACH

How We Apply Discourse Analysis

Within the family of Qualitative & Mixed Methods, discourse analysis is applied through one stated tradition, since each answers a different question.

Analytic Lens and Tradition We fix the lens first: discursive psychology looks at action in talk, critical discourse analysis at power and ideology, Foucauldian analysis at discourses and subject positions.

Transcription and Context Transcription detail follows the variant, from a clean verbatim transcript to Jefferson notation for pauses and overlaps. Extracts keep enough surrounding talk or text to support each reading.

Constructed Accounts, Not Beliefs We analyze how versions of events are built and what they do in context, such as blaming, excusing, justifying or positioning, and make no claim about what speakers privately think or feel.

Warrant and Deviant Cases Each reading is warranted by close attention to the extract and, in talk, to how the next speaker responds, and deviant cases are examined so that no claim rests on selected fragments.

DELIVERABLES

What You Receive

As part of our Qualitative & Mixed Methods Analysis service, the readings are delivered with the extracts and files needed to report them.

Data & Variable Review Recordings and documents are checked, the transcription level is agreed to the variant, and sources and dates are recorded, so each extract can be placed in its context.

Method-Specific Checks Readings are tested against the surrounding turns or paragraphs and against deviant cases, and each claim is checked for whether the extract itself supports it.

Statistical Results The patterns of language use identified, such as repertoires, subject positions or ideological strategies, each with the extracts and analytic commentary that warrant it.

Publication-Ready Tables & Figures A table of discursive patterns with annotated extracts and, where it fits, a transcript excerpt in the notation used, formatted to the journal's requirements and SRQR.

Interpretation The analysis is written as a reading of how language works in these data, with the tradition and its limits stated, as a base for your own argument about the topic.

Reproducible Analysis Files The NVivo, MAXQDA or ATLAS.ti project is provided with the extract log, transcript conventions and memos, so each reading can be traced to its source.

ALTERNATIVE METHODS

When Another Method May Be More Appropriate

We choose the method by what the question asks of the text. Discourse analysis studies language as action, and these methods fit other aims and kinds of data.

01
Content Analysis

When the question is what is said and how often, in defined categories, content analysis fits better than reading how language builds and performs a topic.

02
Thematic Analysis

When patterns of meaning across participants answer the question and talk is read as a report of experience, thematic analysis suits better than reading language as action.

03
Narrative Analysis

When the order of a told story and its turning points hold the meaning, narrative analysis reads the structure of the telling, not the discursive resources in use.

04
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA)

When the question is what living through one event meant to those involved, IPA reads their talk as access to experience, which discourse analysis deliberately sets aside.

CASE EXAMPLE

How We Work in Practice

An illustration of how a discourse design moves from a protocol to readings that are warranted by the extracts.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · ARTS FUNDING EVALUATION · UNITED STATES

An arts council evaluation office wanted to understand how funding panels talked about quality when scoring applications, and needed more than the criteria the panels cited.

The protocol, written before analysis began, specified discursive psychology applied to recordings of panel deliberations and the published guidelines, with a simplified Jefferson-style transcription for the sections analyzed. A first pass treated the talk as a source of opinions and listed what panelists valued, which the protocol had not intended. We returned to the question of what the talk did: how a judgment was made to sound neutral and how doubt was managed before a score was agreed. Each claim was tied to extracts with the neighboring turns kept, and a panel that reasoned differently was treated as a deviant case, not set aside.

Outcome: The office received annotated extracts organized by discursive pattern, the transcription conventions used, an analytic commentary on each pattern and a methods paragraph naming the tradition.

RESEARCHER VOICE

What Researchers Say

Feedback from a researcher who needed to analyze language and context without reducing the work to simple content coding.

“We came to the team with a fairly technical Discourse Analysis problem: how to analyze language and context without reducing the work to simple content coding. They worked through the assumptions and reporting choices with us, then delivered a clean analytical summary rather than pages of software output. The final output was concise, clearly interpreted, and ready to use in our research reporting.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions About Discourse Analysis

Short answers to what researchers ask before a discourse study, from choosing a tradition to confidentiality and the assessment process.

No, the two ask different questions of text. Content analysis classifies what is said into defined categories and may count them. Discourse analysis asks how language constructs a version of the world and what it accomplishes in context, so an extract is read within the surrounding talk and not sorted into a category. Counting topics in a discourse study misses its focus on language as action.

The variant follows your question and theoretical tradition. If the question is how people manage blame or accountability in talk, discursive psychology fits; if it is how texts sustain or contest power, critical discourse analysis fits; if it is how a discourse makes some identities available, a Foucauldian reading fits. They differ in data, transcription and evidence, so the tradition is named and applied consistently.

No, it is not designed to. Discourse analysis treats an account as something built for its setting and purpose, so a reading describes what the talk constructs and does. Claims about inner beliefs would need a different design and method, and a discourse study should say that plainly in its methods.

Yes, we can review a completed discourse analysis before submission or in response to reviewers. We read whether the tradition is stated, whether extracts carry enough surrounding context, whether readings are warranted and deviant cases examined, then set out what stands and what needs further work.

Recordings, transcripts, documents and coded project files are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.

You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
