METHOD OVERVIEW
What Is the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test?
The Wilcoxon signed-rank test compares two related measurements, such as scores before and after treatment or under two conditions, by ranking the absolute within-pair differences and comparing the rank sums of positive and negative differences. It suits ordinal scores with enough points for differences to be ranked by size, and continuous paired data whose differences a mean summarizes poorly; for coarse grades, the sign test is the stricter choice. Its usual reading as a shift in location, estimated by the Hodges-Lehmann estimator, requires the paired differences to be reasonably symmetric, and it should not be reported as a test of the median without that condition. Zero differences reduce the effective sample, and ties change the null distribution. A matched-pairs rank-biserial correlation expresses the effect size. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides Wilcoxon signed-rank test analysis within your study design, with the relevant checks, effect estimates, uncertainty measures, interpretation and publication-ready reporting.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
When Is the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test Appropriate?
The signed-rank test fits two related measurements that a mean-based analysis summarizes poorly, and these are the research situations in which researchers most often ask us to apply or confirm it.
Ordinal Paired Scores A multi-point pain rating or summed symptom score is recorded twice for the same participants, and a mean change would claim more precision than the scale can support.
Skewed or Outlying Differences Paired continuous measures, such as biomarker levels, yield differences with heavy tails or outliers in a small sample, and a mean change is hard to defend.
Small Matched Samples A pilot, a rare-condition study or a matched-pair design has too few pairs for approximations to be trusted, and an exact procedure is preferred.
Reviewing a Completed Analysis A signed-rank result was read as a test of medians, or zeros went unreported, and a reviewer noticed. Independent Statistical Review checks what the test supports.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH
How We Apply the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test
Within the family of Comparative & Hypothesis Testing, the test is chosen only after the pairing, the scale of measurement and the shape of the differences have been examined.
Paired Structure We confirm that every observation is paired with exactly one other and that different pairs are independent. Unrelated groups and three or more occasions call for different procedures.
Symmetry and Interpretation The usual location reading needs differences that are roughly symmetric around their center, which we judge from a plot. If they are clearly skewed, we state what the test supports or use the sign test, which assumes less.
Zeros and Ties Zero differences drop out of the ranking and tied absolute differences rule out the standard exact tables, so we report the pairs tested and use exact conditional or tie-corrected methods.
Effect Size and Location Estimate We report the matched-pairs rank-biserial correlation or r, and the Hodges-Lehmann estimate of the typical paired shift with its confidence interval, so the finding has a size and a precision.
DELIVERABLES
What You Receive
As part of our Quantitative Data Analysis service, the paired rank-based analysis is delivered with the estimates, checks and files needed to report and defend it.
Data & Variable Review Pair identifiers, scale coding, the direction of each difference, missing values and unmatched records are reviewed, and incomplete pairs and zero differences are counted before any test is run.
Method-Specific Checks The symmetry of the differences, the scale of measurement and the extent of ties are examined, with a sign test or paired t-test run as a sensitivity analysis where it helps.
Statistical Results Medians and interquartile ranges at each measurement, the signed-rank statistic with its p-value, the number of nonzero pairs, the rank-biserial correlation and the Hodges-Lehmann estimate with its interval.
Publication-Ready Tables & Figures Summary tables and figures, such as paired-line plots or a histogram of the differences, formatted to APA 7 or the journal's requirements, ready to insert.
Interpretation The result is written as the direction and typical size of the paired shift, within what the design and the symmetry judgment support, with zeros and ties reported.
Reproducible Analysis Files SPSS syntax, R scripts or Stata do-files are provided where applicable, so each statistic and interval can be traced and rerun if the data change.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS
When Another Method May Be More Appropriate
We choose the method by design and outcome type. The signed-rank test needs paired data, and these methods fit other structures and outcomes better.
01
Paired Samples t-Test
For a continuous outcome without badly outlying differences, the paired t-test gives the mean change with its interval and is slightly more powerful under normality.
02
Friedman Test
With three or more related measurements, Friedman ranks each participant's scores across all occasions in one test; with only two, it would reduce to a sign test.
03
Mann-Whitney U Test
When the two sets of scores come from separate, unrelated participants, the comparison is between independent groups, and a signed-rank test would wrongly assume pairing.
04
McNemar's Test
When each paired response is a yes-or-no classification, there are no differences to rank, and the comparison rests on the pairs that moved between categories.
CASE EXAMPLE
How We Work in Practice
An illustration of how a paired ordinal comparison moves from a planned test to a reportable, defensible result.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · VETERINARY CLINICAL RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
A veterinary clinic recorded a clinical pain score for dogs with osteoarthritis before and after four weeks on a new analgesic regimen and needed to show whether scores fell.
The pain index summed several items scored 0 to 4, an ordinal measure with a limited range, so we specified the Wilcoxon signed-rank test as the primary analysis before follow-up scores were examined, without relying on a normality test. Several dogs had the same score at both visits, which produced zero differences, and ties among the rest ruled out the standard exact tables. We reported how many dogs had a nonzero difference and used a tie-corrected approximation. A plot showed the differences to be roughly symmetric, so the Hodges-Lehmann estimate was interpreted as a typical paired shift, and a sign test served as a sensitivity analysis. Without a control group, we noted that regression to the mean and placebo response could contribute to any change.
Outcome: The clinic received median scores with interquartile ranges, the signed-rank test with the number of nonzero pairs, the matched-pairs rank-biserial correlation, the Hodges-Lehmann estimate with its 95% confidence interval, the sign-test result, a methods paragraph, tables and the analysis syntax.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from a researcher who wanted a second review of a paired analysis and clearer reporting for the manuscript and reviewer responses.
“I wanted a second set of statistical eyes on our Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, mainly because of the repeated or paired structure of the measurements. The review was practical and specific, and the final results were much easier to explain to the rest of the research team. The final reporting was much easier to use in the manuscript and in responding to reviewer comments.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test
Short answers to what researchers ask before a paired rank-based analysis, from medians and ties to confidentiality and the assessment process.
Does the Wilcoxon signed-rank test compare medians?
Only under conditions. The usual interpretation as a shift in location assumes the paired differences are roughly symmetric, and then the target is the pseudo-median of the differences, estimated by Hodges-Lehmann, which equals the median only under symmetry. Without symmetry, the test does not address the median of differences. The sign test does, with fewer assumptions and less power, so we state which quantity is reported.
How are zero differences and ties handled?
Pairs with no change carry no rank and are removed from the ranking, which shrinks the effective sample, so we report how many pairs entered the test. Ties among the absolute differences rule out the standard exact tables, so software uses a tie-corrected normal approximation, or an exact conditional method where available. We state the method used rather than leaving it to the default.
Should I use the Wilcoxon signed-rank test or a paired t-test?
Decide by the outcome and the quantity you need to report, not by a normality test. An ordinal score, or a few extreme differences among few pairs, favors the signed-rank test and a Hodges-Lehmann shift. A continuous outcome with well-behaved differences favors the paired t-test, which reports the mean change in the outcome’s units. Under normality the signed-rank test loses little efficiency, so interpretation matters more than power.
Can you review an analysis that has already been completed?
Yes, we can review a completed signed-rank analysis before submission or a response to reviewers. We check the pairing, whether the results were described as medians, the handling of zeros and ties, the effect size and its interval, and the reporting, and confirm what stands or needs to change.
How do you protect my dataset and research confidentiality?
Your dataset, output files and any protocol or analysis plan are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before sensitive materials are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
