Statistical Analysis for International Business Research
International business statistical analysis is the statistical design, analysis and reporting of studies of firms, managers and markets across countries, using multinational firm data, surveys administered in several languages and country-year indicators such as exchange rates, inflation and trade. Observations share a country, so individual-level standard errors are too small; scales translated into several languages may not carry the same meaning in each; and macro variables differ in currency, units and timing, so a workflow that pools every respondent, compares scale means across countries and merges indicators without alignment gives results that cannot be defended. OnlineSPSS, a specialist statistical consultancy for academic, clinical and professional research, provides cross-country business data analysis through in-house PhD-level statisticians, who settle the level of each variable, the comparability of each measure and the alignment of the country data with you before any model is fitted.
WHEN TO ENGAGE
Statistical Support at Different Stages of International Business Research
International business researchers often reach us when countries, languages or currencies complicate a design or a reviewer's reading of it.
Designing a Cross-Country Study You are planning a multi-country survey or a firm-level comparison and need the countries sampled, the translation of instruments and the sample size per country settled in the design.
Merging Country and Firm Data Firm or respondent data are to be combined with macroeconomic and institutional indicators, and the matching of years, currencies and units has to be defined and checked.
Comparing Scores Across Countries A scale is to be compared across countries or languages, and its measurement comparability must be tested before any means or path coefficients are set side by side.
Replying to Reviewer Queries A reviewer has questioned country clustering, the endogeneity of an entry or strategy choice or the comparability of the measures, and the analysis needs a defensible answer.
RESEARCH CONTEXT
Research Designs and Data We Work With in International Business
International business studies combine units at several levels, and multinational firm data analysis starts from knowing which firm, country and year each record belongs to.
01
Cross-Country Manager Surveys
Questionnaires answered by managers in several countries and languages, with documented translation procedures and uneven numbers of respondents per country.
02
Multinational Firm Datasets
Parent firms and foreign subsidiaries drawn from firm databases, with ownership, entry mode and performance observed over years and nested in home and host countries.
03
Country-Year Indicator Panels
Exchange rates, inflation, trade and institutional indices by country and year, merged with firm data in nominal and real units and with different base years.
04
Trade and Investment Flows
Bilateral exports or foreign investment between country pairs over years, with many zero flows and distance, language and trade-agreement variables.
05
Cross-National Comparison Studies
Studies comparing values, attitudes or practices across a set of nations, often drawing on public cross-national survey programs.
06
Entry Mode and Strategy Studies
Firms that chose how or where to enter a market, observed after the choice, so the choice itself depends on traits of the firm and the market.
METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Statistical Issues We Consider in International Business Research
These checks come before a cross-country result is interpreted, since country structure and measurement comparability can change a conclusion more than the choice of estimator.
Few Countries and Country Clustering Respondents in one country share a context, and errors that ignore it are too small. With few countries, cluster-robust errors also become unreliable, so the model is chosen for the number of countries.
Comparability Before Comparing Scores Configural, metric and scalar invariance are tested before scale means or path coefficients are compared across countries, and partial invariance is reported with the items that differ.
Response Style and Translation Agreement tendencies and translation choices can move scores by country. Translation procedures are documented, and response styles are examined before differences are read as cultural.
Units, Currency and Time Alignment Variables in different currencies, price bases and years are put on a common unit and aligned in time, and the lag between a country indicator and a firm outcome is justified.
Stable Country Traits and Fixed Effects Country fixed effects absorb stable traits such as legal origin, so their effects cannot be estimated in the same model. A question about such traits needs enough countries for a between-country or multilevel comparison.
Endogeneity of Entry and Strategy A firm's choice of entry mode or market depends on traits that also affect performance, so estimates stay associations unless an instrument or a design supports a causal reading.
STATISTICAL METHODS
Methods Selected for the Research Question and Study Design
Each method family follows the countries, the measures and the data structure in your study, and the line under each title explains why it is used in cross-border research.
Structural & Latent Variable Modeling
Translated scales are tested for invariance in multigroup confirmatory models before countries are compared, and with enough countries, multilevel SEM separates relations within and between them.
Longitudinal & Multilevel Analysis
A random country level suits respondents and firms from many countries, country fixed effects suit few, and country-year panels use fixed or random effects as the question allows.
Clinical, Survival & Epidemiological
Entry and strategy choices are endogenous, so instrumental-variable and matching analyses are used where valid instruments or comparable firms exist, with their assumptions stated.
Regression & Predictive Modeling
Bilateral flows with many zeros are estimated by Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood instead of logs that drop them, and firm outcomes by linear regression with country controls.
Multivariate, Scale & Reliability
Reliability is estimated within each country, since an instrument reliable in one language may not be in another, and dimensionality is examined before invariance testing.
Bayesian & Computational Methods
Wild cluster bootstrap intervals are one way to handle inference with few countries, and missing country-year values are imputed using the country structure.
DELIVERABLES
Statistical Outputs Prepared for Your Research
The outputs follow the structure of a cross-border study, from the review of instruments and indicators to the files that regenerate every table.
Data & Study Review Instruments and translations, country and year identifiers, currencies and price bases, and the source and timing of each indicator are reviewed, so each record sits in a country and a year.
Statistical Analysis Invariance testing, the agreed multilevel, panel or structural models, diagnostics at each level, checks for few-country inference and the planned sensitivity analyses.
Effect Estimates & Uncertainty Country-level and firm-level estimates with confidence intervals, intraclass correlations by country where enough countries exist, fit changes across invariance steps and effect sizes for group differences.
Tables & Figures Country descriptive tables, invariance tables listing the items that differ, coefficient plots by country, alignment tables for merged indicators and counts of firms and countries retained.
Statistical Interpretation Findings are explained for international business questions, with country-level conclusions limited to the number of countries and causal wording kept to what the design supports.
Analysis Files R scripts, Stata do-files, Mplus input files or SPSS syntax, with currency conversions, merge keys and exclusion rules documented, so every table can be regenerated.
REPORTING
Reporting International Business Research
Cross-border studies combine surveys, translations and country data, and the guidance below is applied to each part where it fits.
Cross-country survey studies are reported to APA JARS-Quant, with the sampling frame in each country, response rates by country and the reliability of each scale. Translated and adapted instruments follow the ITC Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests (2nd ed., 2017), and the invariance steps, the changes in fit and the items freed under partial invariance are tabulated. Panel and firm-level studies describe how country indicators were merged, the currency and price basis and the treatment of missing country-years. Journal instructions, including data and code policies, are checked last, and each estimate is reported with its interval.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How the Analysis May Look in Practice
An illustration of how a translated survey moves from comparability testing to a cross-country result worded for a few countries.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · MULTINATIONAL SUBSIDIARY SURVEY RESEARCH · UNITED STATES
A researcher studying subsidiaries of a multinational group asked whether managers' perceived autonomy was related to knowledge sharing across units, using a translated survey from subsidiaries in several countries.
The survey was administered in several languages in a small number of countries, with uneven numbers of managers per country. Before any structural estimate was seen, translation procedures were documented, each scale was tested for configural, metric and scalar invariance, partial invariance was allowed only for items with a substantive reason, and means were compared only for scales that met the level required. Because so few countries were involved, country entered the structural model as a set of fixed indicators, so the relationship between autonomy and knowledge sharing was estimated within countries and no country-level effect was claimed. Autonomy and knowledge sharing came from the same managers, so findings were worded as associations.
Outcome: The researcher received the invariance results at each step, the within-country structural estimates with 95% confidence intervals, a limitations paragraph on what a few countries allow and the scripts.

RESEARCHER VOICE
What Researchers Say
Feedback from an international business researcher on a dataset that was not a textbook example, on clustering handled from the start, and on concise output.
“We contacted OnlineSPSS because our dataset was not a textbook example and we needed someone familiar with International Business. They focused immediately on the clustered structure of the data rather than treating every row as independent, then built the analysis around the actual study design. The final output was concise and easy to use with the wider team.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions About Statistical Analysis for International Business
Short answers to what international business researchers ask before sharing a study, from comparing scores across countries to merged indicators, confidentiality and the assessment.
What statistical methods are used in international business research?
International business research most often uses multilevel and panel models for firms and respondents nested in countries, multigroup measurement models for translated scales, Poisson pseudo-maximum-likelihood regression for trade flows with many zeros, and instrumental-variable designs for endogenous choices. These are the core of international business research statistics. Our Statistical Methods pages show how each family is applied.
Can I compare scale means across countries?
Scale means can be compared across countries only after the scale has been shown to measure the same construct in each country. A cross-national survey comparison therefore tests configural, metric and scalar invariance first. If full invariance does not hold, partial invariance may support limited comparisons, and where it fails, relationships within countries can still be compared.
How do you handle clustering when there are only a few countries?
With only a few countries, cluster-robust standard errors are too optimistic, and a random country level is poorly estimated as well. We usually enter country fixed effects, so relationships are estimated within countries, and check inference with wild cluster bootstrap intervals. Effects of country-level variables need many more countries, so with few of them we state that the data cannot answer that question.
How should country-year data in different currencies be combined with firm data?
Each indicator is put on a common currency and price basis, matched to the firm’s fiscal year, and lagged where theory says its effect is delayed. The choice of exchange rate, the base year and the handling of missing country-years are documented, because they can change the results as much as the model does.
How is confidential firm or survey data handled?
Survey files, firm records and analysis files are handled confidentially, and project information is not published. An NDA is available where required and can be arranged before firm-level or partner data are shared. Read more about confidentiality and data security.
What happens when I request an assessment, and how long does it take?
You share your research question, design and relevant materials, and a statistically trained Research Coordinator reviews the request and responds the same day. The analysis, deliverables, timeline and one fixed project fee are then confirmed before any work begins, so the timeline follows from the agreed scope.
